Marans Thread - breed discussion & pictures are welcome!

Yes there are clean legged Marans. Those are not American SOP. British SOP actually requires clean legs.

Thank you so much for answering me. I am getting some Marans eggs from someone, looked again at his photos..beautiful birds..but no feathers on those legs. Interesting how different countries can be in what they .. either approve of..or could just say, prefer. Thanks again! I am not so worried now that these aren't pure. Blues, hoping for a great hatch since he is bringing them to my home. :)

Do BCM cockerels develop faster than Blue/black marans? My first hatch of BCM, I ended up with 2 cockerels and very quick comb and wattle development. My second hatch of Blues/black, are six days shy of a month old and in comparison to my BCM at the same age has very little comb and wattle development. I tried wing sexing,(and could be wrong) I thought I had 1 cockerel and 1 hen. I am learning as I am going. So any insight would be appreciated.

If a black copper marans cockerel, at about 8 1/2 weeks old, has a little copper on his wings, would you say that he's going to have too much color on him when he matures? I took a guess on which of my boys would have the best chance for replacing my current roo and added them into the flock. I'll remove all but the best one when they grow up a bit. There were 2 with obviously too much color down their chests that I left out and one with some copper on his wings.

Been a while since I've been on here, but am planning on hatching this year. Here's a few I collected last week from the girls. Shooting to get the eggs in the incubator by Saturday at the latest and hoping for a full 96 count tray if all works out... these are a combo of black/blue/splash copper eggs. (wee bit dirty ;) )

Glad to see you on here! Good luck with them!

I just added a blue copper to my flock! (Meanwhile, my poor GCM is working on healing a prolapsed vent... advice and well wishes appreciated).

cute chick pics!

Not sure if you're still having prolapse issues, but if so try keeping her in near total darkness and feed only low-protein feed for 2-3 weeks. Inject hemorrhoid cream into vent using small needleless syringe. Per my Vet. Hard, I know, but it worked with one of my bantams. The reduced light and low-protein will keep her from laying until she can heal. Good luck.

I'm super excited to finally find some FBCM chicks so that I can start breeding to SOP. This is one of my babies:
