Marans Thread - breed discussion & pictures are welcome!

Hello from England! I have one Wheaten Marans currently and I really like her, she is 30 weeks old and hasn't laid yet.

Any feed back on her would be appreciated, I don't intend on showing her but if she's really nice I might find her a roo. The photo was taken a couple of days ago but it's quite blurry and dark because I had to zoom, and the weather is horrible here at the moment.

In my limited knowledge - I like her type, her legs are the right colour, this photo makes her look darker than she really is but she is still fairly dark for a Wheaten, I love her width and tail width, her eyes are the right colour but her comb has a couple too many points.

Hello and welcome.

One of my BCMs laid her first egg.  It was between 7-8 in color out of 9 so I am happy about that.

Congrats!

My new BCM roo joined the flock today. He got his poor butt kicked by my ameraucana roo :/ I'm sure he'll know his place in the flock though within a couple days. The fighting seemed to be over by bed time and he had no problem getting a spot on the roost but his comb is now all blue koted. I thought he'd take over leadership due to his size but I guess not.

These pullets are very young..... no eggs yet but beautiful and great feathering. These are black marans not black copper marans. That may be obvious to some but in my case I do not own a BCM pullet/hen with copper hackles!

All of mine look like black marans.

Congratulations! Surprised they laid this late in season-that is great!. Over here, everyone I know has had a dramatic decrease in egg production being late in season and molting going on, as well. My blue Copper Marans pullets are about 16 weeks so we probably will have to wait all the way until spring until we can see how dark their eggs will be. Hoping at least one will sneak an egg out before winter really hits over here.

My Marans are just starting to lay (NE Alabama) at 7 months old. I have one Rooster who I was really looking forward to fertilizing the eggs for hatching a few, but sadly I am have decided to rehome him. We got them at one week old, and within the past month he has turned really mean. He attacks my 2 teenage girls and my 10 yr old son and now me. The final straw was him fighting with the duck and tearing him up pretty badly. The duck is recovering and Mr. Roo is now penned until he goes to a new home. Everyone else is free ranging (except Mr. Duck who is recooperating inside). My other breeds of hens took about a 6 wk break from egg legging and are now back to laying. Do Marans not typically lay over the winter?
