Marans Thread - breed discussion & pictures are welcome!

Just an FYI, as I know most of y'all purchase from breeders, but for folks that are just playing with pretty eggs, efowl.com has two sections of marans. The ones with feathered legs they list under "french" marans, clean legs are just marans. In the clean they have BCM and Cuckoo, for French I saw BCM, Blue, and I think wheaten too.

The Bev Davis/Wade Jeanne bloodline is what I am working with. My big roo is not clean legged. Neither is the back up roo. I don't like clean legged BCM's for sure.
Yeah Im not too happy about one of my roosters cropping up clean legged. May not use that group for breeding depending on how they feather out. The clean legged roo that hatched has already been culled. The GFF/LP chicks I have coming in March will hopefully look better.

You are not going to cross Little Peddler with Greenfire Farms are you?

If one likes Little Peddler and wants to stay pure Little Peddler, here's how to do it via the advice of
renowned poultry experts Walt Leonard ( Chairman of the APA Standards Committee) and the late BYC educator
Bob Blosl of Rhode Island Red fame.
Two people get birds from the same strain. They live at least 500 miles apart. they carefully line breed their
birds for 5 years carefully culling for quality. At the end of 5 years, the 2 people (tho their birds initially came
from the same breeder) will, by way of different choices in climate, diet, management techniques, breeding decisions,
and personal taste, have created gene pools that can be exchanged and incorporated into their own flock. Tho the birds
have the same base genetically, the breedings will be like line breedings instead of inbreedings. So every 5-6 years
these two breeders can exchange stock and keep the strain pure without strain-crossing or worries of inbreeding.

 Best,
 Karen  :)

The lines are already crossed in the chicks I have purchsed. I would prefer pure GFF or LP one or the other but I wasnt about to drop $59 per chick from GFF right now and LP eggs are $200 per dozen. Once I get out of nursing school I will splurge and get some though. They can be my graduation present to myself. Lol I am still a newbie to Marans and wanted a few to learn with. I figure if we breed strictly the best looking trio or pair we end up with and cull heavily we can start working them as close as we can to SOP. My Marans are projects for me. I enjoy chickens and look forward to learning all I can from you guys. :)

Thanks for all the links. I have had my eye on some Little Peddler eggs.. theyre gorgeous. The site I was looking at was Little Peddlers Marans. I could have sworn they were $200 per dozen but I may be confusing it with another site I looked at. I will spring for some LP chicks or eggs just as soon as I graduate. I will have enough to keep me occupied for the time being.

LP are $125 for 6 if your on her site, so you werent far off stating $200 a dozen.

Hey all, I'm pretty new to chickens, only being in the game a year so bear with me I'm a newbie to genetics. I have a line of blue and splash Marans originally from Bev Davis. I've been thinking of introducing black copper or blue copper into my flock. I've done some research into the genetics but don't understand the genetic difference in black copper vs black and blue copper vs blue. Where (genetically) does the copper come into play? (Before anyone gets upset, I am not breeding for SOP, just a hobby.)

If you don't get an answer here, try the Black Copper Marans Discussion thread. There's a few good breeders on there
