Hi, I still have the same comment basically. He has what I call a Copper color with a blended STRAW color Hackle. There would be nothing wrong as I see Straw hackle winning BB at shows.

Hi all, Will elaborate a little on the White undercolor, This is a genetic fault just like the white in wing or tail feathers. I will never breed any of this white again as it will be there in a lot of the offspring. I have been there done that and did not like the outcome.

If you notice a lot of the Wheaten males have what we oldtimers call a cotton tail, that is they have a ball of white fluff at base of the tail where it joins the back. This is a no no also.

I for one am so glad to actually have a reason for what I am seeing on my roo. I was going cross eyed staring at him when he was dry but this morning wet... I was speechless, but only for a moment and then I was just upset. These came from the same breeder of the mossy chicks and the one with the fused toes. Sorry, just had to vent a moment.

I think there's been several pics (not just my own) over the past couple of days that have been "lost in the shuffle".

In all fairness, I think Wynette and Snowbird, as unofficial judges, should critique all the other birds posted. That's the only way you'll know what the same "judge" sees and thinks when looking at and comparing birds. In a show the judge looks at and compares entry to entry - and entry to standard - and can tell you what they like about one vs. the other.

Of course everyone can post what they see and what they think but the only way we'll be able to compare apples to apples is if the same person "judge" will comment on each bird. With two impartial judges we should get a good idea of what they are looking for.

I think this is fun and educational and informational, at least for me it is.

Jan~ I only wear the azure ones while looking at chickens.....the rest of the time I wear the rose (pink) colored ones. lolol. Debbi~ Sorry, false alarm, she is not blue. Must have just been the glare off the first photo of her after hatch and she wasnt completely dry. Thanks for updating us on Pip, I have a huge soft spot for lonely chicks.

You have been so helpful Don. Like I said in an earlier post - I learn something new every day. I have yet to read anything about white down undercoats. I acutally went out today and wrestled a couple of my roos, including the one in the pic, so that I could check their undercoat - sure enough the one in the first set of pics does have a white downy undercoat.

However, my younger group of birds, which consist of two roos, do NOT have the white undercoat. Their undercoat was more dark grey or light black - hard to tell with the roo flopping and flapping for its life. The tiny feathers that were flying were black. They are also "better" looking roos in my humble opinion. I may post pics later.

Again, very helpful post because I never knew that's what people were referring to as "straw" color. I assumed it meant the entire hackle was straw color and even then, what's the definition of straw color? This is more like what I thought "straw" color was:

This is why I think Snowbird and Wynette should continue rating/commenting on each set of pics posted. Only by hearing from the same person can we learn what they see through their trained and experienced eyes.

Edited because the wrong pic posted.
