The BC Marans, like many breeds, is a work in progress. It has suffered greatly because of recent popularity. This has lead to some people simply breeding any birds they get and selling the eggs.

However, the best way to improve the breed is to increase the number of serious and dedicated breeders. True, not everyone on BYC is a serious breeder, and that's OK. Some people just want pretty eggs. But, in general, I think the population on BYC cares a bit more than your average group, and sharing eggs with fellow BYCers is one way to increase the numbers of breeders.

I know my birds aren't perfect. I've posted to this thread about them. My rooster's pretty good, and most of my hens are, too. And when I sell eggs, I'll tell you upfront about the imperfections. My eggs are medium dark, not going to get any 9s on the color chart. And I do hatch out some mossy chicks. But I get some good ones, too.

As anyone who hatches many eggs knows, not every chick is going to be show quality, even form the best show birds out there. When you choose hatching eggs, you must accept this. Yes, you can help yourself out by looking at the parent birds, but there is still some risk. If you want to be guarenteed a bird that meets the standard, the ONLY way to do it is to buy adult birds that you personally inspect.

Just MHO.

Are they all born with black eyes that change color? I was looking at the standard and it said black eyes disqualify them... Well, I remember mine having big black eyes, so I went down to check their eyes and they all have correct eyes, obviously it changes... Doo they all change?

I am completely new to Marans. I just got some this weekend. I have 3 white hens, 1 white Roo, 1 black tailed buff hen and 1 black tailed buff that I'm not sure about yet. 1 Birchen roo and 1 Blue Copper Roo. What can anyone tell me about the whites? Or any of them for that matter? The white are just beautiful! Supposedly they are from Bev Davis lines? The lady said she got them all as chicks from Dick Dickerson?

As I understand, White usually comes from Bev Davis - But I don't know much more than that, neither have I heard of Dick Dickerson. You must show photos, especially of how their eggs turn out.

Dick Dickerson is one of the people from the MCC group that is trying to get the Marans approved by APA.

But honestly I don't get much into the "who" and "what they do" part of poultry as much as I should.
