Thank you crinker99. I hope the faults will work themselves out as he matures. He has really been filling out this last month. I think this boy has a LOT more growing to do before he is done. He has a wonderful disposition. He happily follows me all around the yard just hoping I'll toss him a treat. He lets me hold him, but it is not his favorite thing.

The tail really concerns me - - - where is Don, Geebs, Wynette, pink chick, and Ruth. . . .
Tell me what is what on this roo - - - Should I use him ? ? ?

From your previous posts on others birds, I have learned that I will be culling all three of my Blue Copper marans for mossiness. I will be in the market for some DARK (hoping for 7's) Bev Davis lines FBCM hatching eggs in the near future.

I am on the EAST COAST of the US, so if you know somebody on the East Coast of the US who has decent FBCM Bev Davis lines, please pm me . . . . I have spoke to many of you and heard many good things about you guys - - - but either you were on the west coast or you have wade jean lines. . . .

I like your hen and I like her back. She could have used a smidge more copper in the hackle IMO, but I would still use her. Hope she regains her pre-baby weight fairly quickly for you. I always feel bad for them when they loose that. Ohh, I would also keep her for her broodiness abilities too.

I like your roo.....his copper tone is great IMO, love his big beefy chest, wouldn't worry too much about the comb, I like the size of his wattles, I don't particularly care for his tail set or how he carries his hind end but I do like the length of his back. Don't run out and get rid of him.....do some test matings with him and see what he throws by way of tail set to his kiddos.

What are those white feathers? They're under his/her chin and down the front. Is this a fault?

I am at a loss, I don't know what sex I think he/she is, but for being hatched on July 4th and the size of the comb, I would say roo but I am not seeing any saddle feathers starting to come in. Give this youngin just a little more time. Sorry. The white under the beak is still chick down, it will go away.
Hoping someone else with a more definitive answer comes along for you.

You posted early pics of that baby and I SWEAR it was a roo, but it has an overall look like a hen in the side profile pic, your last pic posted. BUT! The copper spreading down the breast is much more typical of a boy. Girls usually have less copper in front.

Some days I watch the little thing and I'm like, oh I can't wait for those dark brown eggs... then the very next I'm convinced he's a cockerel because he'll be sparring with the other little ones. I don't know. I plan on holding onto it for awhile longer. If it's a she, it'll stay. If it's a he, he'll have to go.

I have really learned a lot in reading this thread. It is great for those of us who are trying to learn what is needed with the Marans. It can sure save some mistakes that would otherwise be made in acquiring brood stock

Does anyone have a feather legged Cuckoo (not Golden) that lays a good dark egg (5+ or better).....everything I see in the cuckoo lays a much much lighter egg that any of the other Marans. Surely there are some somewhere that lay an egg that's at least in the 5+ to 6 range.

I am also interested in some GOOD Wheaten eggs from parents that meet the standard as much as possible.
