hi cuckoo chicken people! I got these chickens from my cousin who got them from my other cousin who got them from someone else. They told me they were barred rock, but when I got them home, and they were standing with my barred rocks, it seemed like they just looked a little different. Something about the feathers, the body size and definitely the color of the legs. The new girls' legs were VERY white compared with my ladies legs which are very yellow with a grayish shading up the front of them (one of the new girls also had a bad case of scaly leg mites, I've dipped her and treated the coop, her legs are looking much slenderer now), and they have different personalities. My BR's are very friendly (which may have to do with them loving me since they know I bring them treats all the time), these new girls are very skittish and standoffish.

So, here's a pic of one them... one is the one with bad leg mites, before I treated her, the second is the girl she arrived with. What do you think? Marans? Barred Rock? A mixture? they haven't laid yet, I don't think... we did have one egg that was somewhat darker than our other eggs, but not super darker.

You have RAIN?! My kingdom for a drop or 2!!! I wish we could all just get rain from Earl and no destruction, but having been raised on the East coast...I know that isnt going to happen. Thoughts and prayers already to those who will be in harms way.

Hi math ace. Are you actually getting very many eggs from your marans or other chickens lately? With the record heat we have had this past month I *wish* I had lots of dark eggs or more of any color of eggs for that matter LOL! The chickens I do have laying right now are from my layer pen..the leghorn, the red sexlink and the 2 barred rocks have been laying right through the heat. Most of the rest including the marans and ameraucanas are all being slackers! I think next spring I am getting more leghorns and sexlinks to keep us in steady eggs over the summers. Our leghorn isn't flighty at all she is the sweetest thing and loves dh so much lol. I am hoping now that is has been cool for a few days it will pick back up

I have a question: On the birds that are born from black coppers that are completely (visually) black, does this mean they will still have some copper in thier genes? Or will they be genetically black birds like the BBS blacks?
I recently obtained a solid black hen that came from black copper parents. I am thinking of putting her in with my blk/split lav orps to experiment. I am wondering if I would have a chance of the copper leaking through?

Ruth: I like that silver/gold birchen guy. He is handsome!

Geebs: Your birchen from the black coppers is beautiful too. I wonder if you crossed him with a pure black marans bird (no gold) or a black and silver cuckoo marans hen if you could eventually get more birchens? Does anybody know?
