Marans Thread - breed discussion & pictures are welcome!

I have a question: On the birds that are born from black coppers that are completely (visually) black, does this mean they will still have some copper in thier genes? Or will they be genetically black birds like the BBS blacks?
I recently obtained a solid black hen that came from black copper parents. I am thinking of putting her in with my blk/split lav orps to experiment. I am wondering if I would have a chance of the copper leaking through?

If they came from Black Copper parents they could very well have the gene hiding in there and yes they can pass it on to offspring. Test mating may help you determine this. I am also going to intro lav to an all black Marans pullet no signs of copper, but with the lav gene it should not leak as lavender is not a leaky gene and it covers everything. Blue however does not.

Yep getting a little! We need it though so I am not complaining!

I'm worried about Earl though. I am planning to have some chickens shipped in and they are coming from MA! Earl will probably delay their shipping so I probably won't be able to get them next week.

Here's hoping Earl doesn't leave a path of destruction.

We are getting a little rain here as well today and we it rained here all day yesterday. Feels like October, but we needed it. I think that the Marans took a hint from the Wellies that the rain won't hurt 'em, they spent all day out free ranging in it yesterday. Of course, they couldn't find it within themselves to go in and lay an egg, playing out in the yard was much more fun.

Many thoughts and prayers to those in Earls path!

Koolduck I have an idea on how to make it rain for you.... REMOVE YOU ROOF... AAAARRRRGGGGGGFFFFFF!!!!!!!!!

I am a disorganized random thinker so how are we going to do this??? What is the priority, focus? Are we having our poultry judged.. are we self judging so we can argue and then having a judge do it (I like this idea)... We could make up some cards for points that the Apa would use... and test ourselves so we are sharp!!!

I will get ahold of the Wilmas's and see if we can use their parking lot and Country club and green house... If not I may know of a horse arena that would work real well.... I will have to find tables but this could be a hoot!!! Is there state regs for bringing birds over the border?

I forgot to add earlier that my BCM's aren't laying at all either!

Out of 9 pullets I am lucky if I get 1 egg every 3-4 days!

I wish I was getting more so I could blow them out for my Christmas tree ornaments this year. I am getting a decent amount from my EE hens. Well 6-8 out of 16 hens. About 8 of them are already molting. Our cotton wood trees are losing their leaves almost a month early. I think we are going to have an early winter.

I just wanted to add some dark brown ornaments with the blue/green and pink eggs!

Well maybe I'll just do a green and pink tree this year. They also make really cool Christmas gifts! Pretty and handmade with love!

To my knowledge there are no shows that use the score card system, all use the comparison method. Purina used to make up the entry card for the cage with the score card on the back but that was many year ago.

White legs would be a clue they don't look Marans though the beak is the wrong color too just pretty chickens

What color would you like for the leg coloring to be ?
