Marans Thread - breed discussion & pictures are welcome!

Let's take another look at my roo. Can you tell I like to show him off?? Here he is practicing his crime fighting moves:

There you can see his comb pretty well. I managed to google a pic of a wheaten pene, I can see what you mean. In the penes the comb points start at the back of the had and CURVE to the front but in marans it should be straight up right from the back. Is that right?

ETA: In this one you can see a white feather in his wing AND I also noticed a white feather in his shanks the other day. Never saw it before.

Look at the blade and see if there are four point in a circle there. If there are he has some Pene blood from somewhere and it doesn't make any difference where he came from or who's line.

Thanks for sharing that info! This roo is the only one I have from whatever that line is. The lady said Bev Davis but we all know how much big breeders names get thrown around. I trust the lady who sold them believed that is what they were so no harm done. He is just the sweetest bird, he is going to be with me til he dies. I just love him and he is so handsome, it's a treat to have him in the yard.

Mixing with penes- does this happen a lot with black coppers? So should Maran combs have only 5 points? I just read that on a website, is that true? Or should they just be STRAIGHT up, no round part at the back?

I'm trying to google penedesenca roos, if any of you are on dial up you know what it is like to try to google images. Shoot me!

The proposed standard calls for 5 points but some have more and some less. The round part on the blade part is a major fault.

I am glad to see another person not hung up on the comb.... ha ha.. My rooster's comb looks like play=dough... ha ha.

I will have to get a pic for you all. My Charlie (and the chocolate factory) has molted and he used to have lots of flames in his chest.. Guess what??? (running out to take pic... will be back to post soon)

I wish you luck, chickens are the absolute worst to take pictures of. My camera sucks too so everytime a chicken is in a great pose, it won't take the picture, then it will take it when I am getting the stank eye from them.

Here is some of my girls... They are just starting to get good eye color and red in the hackles... They are in a holding pen as "2011 hopefuls"
Some are getting red in the combs... We shall see... I was going to cull them and then they started developing red in the hackles at the last minute so we will see what happens here.

These have made it to the evening gown event... ha ha.. They passed the bathing suit test and now it is for egg color whether they will remain as next years Pagent winners.

Sorry but at those age I'm pretty sure they'll look like my Bev Davis girls. This is about how much copper mine have: (

Beyond her soul piercing gaze, see that tiny bit of copper near her earlobe? That's all.

Well I didn't see any a week ago at inspection and now they all have at least a few feathers worth... I can breed them back again or just sell them to someone with an overcolored roo on the same lines.

Wow nice pic and look at the suspicion.. I got the look today from my new 5 month old pullet...I will post it.

I posted a while back about my 2 baby wheaten boys I was growing out, and that I liked one more than the other, he was bigger, huskier; only thing I didnt like about him was his tail was a bit squirrely. I went out to the coop during one of our heat waves, and found him keeled over, dead. So that took care of choosing who I would keep as a roo. He hasnt turned out badly; I wish he were beefier and bigger. He's 6 months old, so I dont know if I can expect him to fill in a bit more.

Illia, those boys of yours are just gorgeous. Gives me something to strive for.

jlj ,

White legs are a good thing! Looks like he'll be a big boy too. Now, if you are breeding for the French standard, they need feathered shanks.

I tried to take pics of my first hatch, which is now 11 weeks today. First thing I learned while taking pics; DON'T FEED THEM TREATS! LOL. You'll never get their heads off the ground. Next, don't take pics in bright sun, washes them out. Just when I think I have the perfect shot, they move! Click fast and often, maybe a good pic will just happen?? Here's the best of the best pics I got of everybody at 10 1/2 weeks old. Will try again with my new found pic taking lessons learned!

All of them are coppering in, eyes are looking good, still have those %#@* white primaries, but they are molting them out. The cockerel and one pullet have feathered shanks, the other two pullets are clean legged, although all were born, but one, with feathered shanks.

The first born pullet thinks she's a Macaw, and loves to perch on my arm,

So far, the only one I can see keeping for breeding, is the second one born, Beaut, she has feathered shanks, is of good size, but has the least copper so far on her neck. They all came from a #7 ruby egg, so if nothing else, I should get good colored eggs from them. Will try to get better pics tomorrow of them...no treats!
