Marans Thread - breed discussion & pictures are welcome!

264 pages- I will never get through it! So, curiosity- are BCM's usually brooders? I know any hen can go broody, but I also know some are more prone then others, I never thought of BCMs as broody. Well, I got one! So, is is a breed trait, or is mine just special?

Yes, they're broody.

A few of us here, including me, use them to incubate eggs. Course, my Araucanas and Ameraucanas are beating them at the broodiness race though. But still, with their size especially, they can also set a LOT of eggs.

Countrywife , Welcome to the thread!! There are a few here that have very broody BCMs. Ruth would be one that comes to mind!

All I've read about the breed says they normally are not broody; guess the chooks forgot to read that part of the breed description!

BROODY - - - I have 1 out of 4 FBCM that have gone broody in the first year . . .. .

Don . . .
TEXTURE - - what kind of texture should the combs have? ?
My roo tolerates it well, but I love to rub his comb

Poor roo - - -I know he thinks I am invading his space

I started doing it to establish my dominance over him, but . . . I like the way his comb feels

VERMONT - - - It gets cooold there. I am a long distance from you.
I was trying to see if any of our BYC folks might be close enough to you that you could just buzz over
to someone's coop and pick up a couple of fluffy butt marans. However, I think you are the first person
from Vermont that I have met on BYC.

PINK - - - don't forget about me while you are answering geebs pm!

It is a good thing you asked because I don't think we talked a whole lot about the broodiness or lack there of with the breed.

NOW if you wanted to know about daughters breeding to fathers and sons breeding to mothers
OR if you wanted to know what the proposed APA standard will be
OR if you wanted to see and evaluate the faults of marans from real life photos
OR if you wanted to know the difference between straw, copper, or mahogony coloring
OR if you wanted to know the range of possible eye color,
Or if you wanted to know how to fix the coloring on a FBCM hen without enough copper hackle coloring
OR if you wanted to know what a Squirrel tail is and looks like
OR if you wanted to see how dark eggs can be
Or if you wanted some tips on how to keep the wildlife out of your coop
Or if you wanted to find some great people who could act as mentors on your trip down the MARANS road

You would want to go visit those 264 pages of information

Wow math ace... did we write all that stuff... I remember some others:

A page about immunizations
White wing feathers
Proper combs
Mossiness
lots of pictures
Something about Salmon marans
Lots of good friends... (we both remembered that)
Prepping for show advice.
What we feed our marans.
Favorite lines.

Every one, every day, year round. I can't keep them laying because they stay broody year round. 5 or 6 out of a pen of 8 - 10 will be broody at the same time fighting over the same spot. If they didn't stay broody, I could get a few dozen eggs per day instead of a few eggs per day. I'm about to get rid of the lot of them because they don't lay, they just stay broody. If I let them hatch some eggs, they wait a few days, tend to the chicks a few days, then they are back on the nest and their chicks are running around the yard motherless.

Here's what Ruth had to say about her broodies,,,

I guess ya missed my write up on my broody

H-Annebelle Lector.... she eats them as they pip... sick sick birdy... she doesn't even need fava beans.

Quite possibly the world most worthless hen.

Okay - the suspense is killing me.........

A little bird told me.........

I've yet to get official notification and nobody's posting anything.........

Did my FBCM eggs really win 1st Place, Best in Show and People's Choice awards at the International Show in Wisconsin this weekend? Could someone please send me a picture?

Geebs,

Did you try what Bev suggested?? She is such a pretty hen, would hate to cull that one!!

Oops! Didn't see the part about the eggs were pipping! Dang, have you tried a roll-out nest box for her and stealing her eggs??
