Marans Thread - breed discussion & pictures are welcome!

His color is great and his body so far seems decent, but he's at that weird young age where his crop just pokes out quite a bit, so either a better pose/photo can help or you'd need to wait for him to mature a little more.

Otherwise he looks pretty good so far! How old is he? 5-6 months?

Here's a front photo of my roo and picture of some of my pullets. I do have a backup roo if something happens to this one. He's really mossy, though. I guess it's now a waiting game to see how he matures.

Alright, let's talk about this for a moment . . . .

My hens are presley / davis mix. When I contacted presley about the best way to improve their egg color - - -to mate with a davis roo or a presley roo - - - He told me he does not recommend crossing breed lines.

I spoke to another lady who had two branches of the wade jean line - - - something like a c1 and c2 line - - - and she said her hatchings were horrid when she crossed these two lines .. .

So, I am stuck here wondering do I cross or so I not ? ? ?

Who is this keeps a line pure and who is crossing and who is doing both and tracking their results to determine which scenario plays out best ? ? ??

Soooo.. Should it be avoided? Crossing to another line?

Yes, 6 months old. He just started crowing last week, the first time I heard him I thought something was dying painfully in the yard LOL! It took the dogs all week to stop running to see what was making such an awful noise!
His adult feathers are just coming in, his tail feathers have only been growing out in the last couple weeks too, he's got a ways to go still. His crop is full, he just got a bunch of treats from the kids when I took the picture, it does add to the gawkyness doesnt it LOL!
And, I agree, he is georgeous regardless!
I will get better pics tomorrow, what areas/angles should I try to get better pics of?

Try for a side full body profile - That way the tail angle, chest depth, and wing carriage and so on can be seen better.
