Marans Thread - breed discussion & pictures are welcome!

Well, it's after midnight. My glass slipper just fell off my feet and about 50 roosters are going to start crowing in 3 1/2 hours so it's off to bed for me. Night all - it's been fun.

The sad thing is with the $26 PER EGG charge, there is no guarantee that you won't receive a truckload of 5 and 6's.

NOW GIRLS - - - DON"T GO RAISING THOSE PRICES - - - I have to get eggs from somebody and I am still looking for those FAMOUS Bev Davis eggs - - -BUT COME ON - - - I need to eat TOO.

This quote made me think, Does anyone have a software program or some sort of record keeping system they use to organize all the info regarding their flocks? You know, health records, hatchings, breedings, etc. I don't want to reinvent something that already exists.
Thanx.
PS I am going to re-post pictures of my 2 BCM cockerels for opinions. I think it got lost in the discussion shuffle yesterday.

OK gang here a few pictures of two cockerels I acquired last Friday. I would like to get into the Marans breeding thang, but if one or both are less than acceptable to work with they will go with my EE's to make Olive Eggers. I know one roo has too many comb points and lack of leg feathers(little tiny pin feathers so maybe they will still come in). I am 100% newbie to the breed so I will not be offended to hear the truth(s). No standard knowledge to have my feelings hurt. So what do you all think? (the one roo w/ leg feathers is missing some tail feathers (?)

These are on a par with most of the other Marans males posted lately. They are both too narrow and the has very little leg feathering so I would not recomment breeding. The one is a little light in color and the other does not have enough color at all. I would not breed either of them.

This is only my opinion and I am no expert.

Promotion is what makes anything sell in life. Paying a big price for eggs does not mean you will get anything worth feeding. Three year ago I paid 80-90 dollars a dozen for eggs that hatched pure Garbage and nothing worth feeding and had to be culled. Some see high selling eggs on the market and think they have to be good and go ahead and pay the price. Shipped eggs very seldom hatch 50 %.

I would never pay more for an egg than a chick. That old saying about a 'bird in hand...' applies here lol. I am glad I am happy with most of my pullets/hens. I don't care if they are pure wade or pure davis or crossed between wade and davis or wade and presley etc. I only care if they look nice and lay a dark egg. The faults can be improved upon. I am still looking for a perfect roo though LOL! I am getting lots of roo babies from my pullets so hopefully one matures into what I want.

Thanx Don. That's what I needed to know. I will use them with my EE's to make OE's. (I'm currently without breeding roos thanx to a pred.) I will work on getting some BCM chicks and hatching some eggs to see if I can get some breeding stock AND some cool dark eggs for my customers. I'm going to "practice" with my bator a few times to make sure my % is acceptable and then I'll try hatching some Marans eggs. Maybe not those million $$ eggs though

Question 1~ The difference is a matter of personal choice and what a person likes about one persons line vs. another, IMO.

Question 2~ One person does not have a monopoly one them, one person just has the opportunity to charge what they want for them and if they can sell them for that price.......more power to them, and it's up to the purchaser if they want to pay the price.

Question 3~ If a person wants something bad enough and has the means to pursue it then they will pay the price for what they want regardless of the outcome.

I paid a pretty penny for some hatching eggs that I had shipped in earlier this year from a gentleman on the east coast, who had birds that I WANTED bad, the first batch....only one hatched the rest were scrambled. Disappointed and knowing that shipping from near New York to Washington State was risky and hatch rates would be very poor, I called him again and purchased another 2 batches of eggs..........out of this second hatch I got 3 birds, one of which didn't make it through the night after hatching. I now have 3 adult birds from him and couldn't be happier with them and I have a great start with pure birds for a little flock of my own. It is a chance we take when shipping in eggs or chicks for that matter, however, chicks do fair far better in shipping than hatching eggs as we know.

It is all a matter of personal choice and what one person would do may not be the thing the next person would do.

JMHO

Most of the people that call and order my chicks or eggs, from my website, are not show people. They will tell me they want them for meat and eggs. They've heard the Martha Stewart and James Bond preferences. They think they are "pretty" (based on the picture) and they want the dark eggs for "fun" and the birds because they are big and meaty. That is 90% of the BCM market out there. When I try and go into APA and standards, they cut me off with "I'm not the least bit interested." The last lady that called and ordered even said (when I was tellling her egg color was light this time of year) "I don't care about egg color, I'm buying them for the meat."
