Marans Thread - breed discussion & pictures are welcome!

I have decided to open a website over the weekend to post pictures of all the faults I can find on my Marans, and believe me there are a lot. This way anyone can access the site and see what we are trying to discuss. I have one setup just have to get some pictures on it for you.

Wynette, The pinched tail shows up in a lot of different breed of poultry. There is no mention of tail shape in the proposed standard and I assume everyone thinks by not talking about the fault it will just up and go away. Some kind of tail shape should be spelled out in the standard. The cutting for defects will not solve the problem since there is no shape that it is supposed to be.

Note: Bantams have a dwarfing gene. I should use the word shrinking gene.. that would be more accurate. Bantam is not dwarfing... Don is right... It is written as dwb not dw... I thing this is where I got the confusion. Not all breeds have a bantamizing gene to create miniatures out of. It is my understanding that the males have considerably more influence on keeping the size small and "shrinking" the larger fowl... It is expressed as dw in gentic lingo.

There is bantam and also Dwarfing, however I have heard of ppl using the dwarfing gene to shrink chickens.. The reading made me blind!!! Now I am truely interested in how to regulate size... I only wish I could understand all that I am reading... Sooo confusing.

The large fowl may operate differently. Thank you for trying to answer my question I do appreciate it. I guess it will be another "try it" and see as snowbird suggested.

Yes and Hathor you are right there are other governing factors at play... steriods in meat etc...environmental factors. I wonder if over time our chickens are getting bigger with us?

Geebs, Seems Don mentioned the "inverted U" shape. What the hey, U, V, close enough for me. Alphabetically and aesthetically! All of my girls have broad backs

Heck, it's just a go to point, the SOP, NO ONE is there or ever will be! One fault at a time. I will go for type first, color, early maturity, productivity, and temperament. Once I get to those points, I feel I can fine tune from there...if I'm still alive!
