Marans Thread - breed discussion & pictures are welcome!

Pink,

I'm wondering if the "flame" would only apply to the Black Coppers and not the Blue Coppers? Flame, shmame, he's still gorgeous!

Wynette, what I see is a hen with extra coppering in breast area and she does have a pinched tail. Notice the brown soft feathers below the vent, That is what you usually get when they are mostly brown as young started chicks. I have some justlike her.

This is what I was talking about before when I said if we have combs where the Blade has no points it would be much easier to breed a Marans with a five point comb. I would breed this male in a heart beat.

But I see (NO OFFENSE INTENDED) NINE points on that comb....or am I seeing it wrong?

I have W. Jeane stock also, from the folks who were the first to purchase hatching eggs from him.

Wynette, yes you are right about the amount of points, If he didn't have the points on the blade of the comd he would have five. I will try and breed the blade points out of mine this next year, Most of mine do not have points on the comb Blade.

ah-ha - I see what you mean when I go back & have another look, Don.

I don't know as I've ever hatched a brownish looking chick, regarding my "too much copper in the chest" hen - here's the lightest pic of a chick I've hatched - is this brown?

Egg questions:

How long does it take for a pullet to get her painting skills up to where they are going to be as an adult? I'm assuming that it takes some time for them to get it right. Are her first eggs the darkest she will ever produce or will egg color improve? Are speckles good or bad? Is shiny better than matte? Best shape?

Thanks!

I would think that what applies to the Black Coppers will apply to the Blue Coppers when/if they are accepted with the exception of the blue thing, I am sure the "blue" will have a standard proposed for its effects and/or its desired effects...ie lacing, hue, leakage that sort of thing, but I feel that is still a long way off.

I don't know if that made sense or not......does it???? Sorry if it doesn't.

I've had a few hens that the egg color has improved over the first few weeks, but haven't personally seen any improvement past this time.

Speckles are fine.

Shiny better than matte.

Shape - believe it or not, an elongated "regular shaped" egg is not the preferred shape, a more rounded egg is preferred. Or at the least, an oval egg that both ends appear to be the same on. So - no smaller/larger end.

She has a nice tail set, even though it is pinched. Can't quite tell her eye color. I like her shank feathering but she does look mossy and has a bit more color than I prefer... But thats just me

Aussie - yup - she has way more color than I prefer. Which is why she's in my layer pen! But, she does lay nice eggies! Here is the roo that I bred her to:

I only have three little eggies from her in the bator, due to hatch tomorrow....I'm so hoping that it's a nice combination with her and this boy! If not, though, it's okay. It was an experimental breeding.

Thanks, Walt - this is interesting to me, and makes me wonder if there are chooks out there with two different eye colors. Would having different eye colors on the same bird be a DQ or point deduction? Or only a point deduction per eye? (I know it probably sounds like I'm being silly, but I truly would like to know.)

Hi

I did bring eye color up with Walt or was it Sam while at a show and there can be quite a bit of difference between the lighter eye color of the rooster and the darker shade of the females.
