Marans Thread - breed discussion & pictures are welcome!

Hey Don,

I got another question . . . .

When should I weigh my birds and what should the weights be ?

Age Male Female
Weight Weight

1 month

3 months

6 months

1 year

I would think intervals like the above. . . Would you start as early as 1 month ? ?
Do you know what the weight range should be ? ?

Of course, I am referring to BCMs.

Can someone tell me which is the dominant leg color.....blue or white...... in regard to the Splash Marans ? I understand that blue is the "correct" color but the majority of the Splash seem to have white legs....So, if you have blue legged hens and a white legged rooster which should be dominant.......or the opposite way round.....blue legged rooster and white legged hens. I have some very nice type white legged Splash hens with good feathered shanks that I really hate to cull on leg color if breeding them to a blue legged rooster would correct the color over a generation or two. Second question in regard to the same thing......what might be the outcome of leg color if a really good dark blue rooster was bred to the white legged Splash hens ?

I would appreciate anyone's input as I would like to put a breeding plan together to work on this. Thanks so much.

I have a Welsummer roo that at 16 weeks was mounting pullets every morning. So your bird is just a quick starting juvenile!

Its was my first time hatching and I know I did so many things wrong. I didn't know what I was doing with my humidity that first week and I just filled up the one water tray in the genesis like the directions said to do. When I realised it should be monitered, I found out my humidity was 85% and above. Now I know better.

PLus I decided I did not want to hatch in my Genesis. Bought a Brower Top Hatch. Found I could keep the temp there steady if I kept the temp probe in one spot but moving the probe around it read a different mumber wherever I put it. And at least 5 degree and over difference. Then the very last thing that happened is that I was using the hatch upright in egg cartons method. But the first two chicks first hatched were Marans and they rolled the other Marans eggs out of the egg carton. The next hatchling died as it pipped downside on the wet paper towel and drowned before it even got out of the egg.

I have taken the four hatched chicks out, I sprayed down the remaining eggs but I don't expect them to hatch. Just leaving them just in case. I have 4 hatchlings, two BCM and two olive eggers. One of the Marens, the first one hatched can not get up off its belly and stand. The legs are not spraddle legged and the chick is strong, just something not right there with the legs.

I'm sorry. My last hatch in January was an emotional mess. I'm getting ready to try again using the dry method that I read about in the learning center and have seen many refer to on the BYC forum. I feel more pre-paired, equiped and educated this time so

. I'm waiting another 48 hours and then I'll set some eggs. Once again my sympathy for your loss.

I am using the dry hatch method also on my second batch. I feel that will work better than the mess I made the first time but we will see. I have 8 eggs of Lavander Orps in the incubator now and all eight are good on day 8 (today) as I candeled them. I still want my Black Copper Marans and Olive Eggers so will see what happens with the chicks I have now. I like hatching and I think it's lots of fun. Stressful too but lots of fun.

I am so excited, my first chicks from my golden cuckoos are hatching! I set 5, one was a dud, 4 grew and 3 have pipped! I should be a new mom by tomorrow!!!

Where can I find what the weight range should be at each stage? ?

Mine are 7 and 11 months old . I have never put them on a scale and want to.
Judging by the feel of them while carrying them, The 7 month old roo weighs more than the 11 month old hens.

I don't think anyone has ever done a study on the Marans at different stages of growth. The 7 month male will weigh more than the 11 month female. The 11 month female should be at the hen weight.
