Marans Thread - breed discussion & pictures are welcome!

Nice picture kathyinmo!

Is the spilt wing more prominent in some breeds? ?
I haven't heard anyone associate it with marans before.

How early can the spilt wing be identified ?
I am assuming this would be a trait that is flatly culled.
In other words, compensational breeding would not help correct this DQ.. . .

Walt,

The bird I learn about what is bad and what is good about a bird . . . I have too wonder

1.) How long does it take to judge an individual bird ? ?

2.) Do judges have a little check off list, so that they don't forget to look for something ? ?

Today, I have been on the road from 1:30 - 8:30. I went to two fellow BYCers and collected eggs for my first incubation. I am attempting to hatch 17 Delawares, and 22 BCM's (blues and blacks). I have lived in Florida for almost my entire life and have never been to the two towns I went to today. I've driven down roads that were miles and miles and miles from anything . . . Good thing I filled up on gas before I left. My goggle directions were wrong. GPS saved me ! !

I guess when we go to pinks - - -

#1 - - pick up chasehope (willing or not - - moot point)
#2 - - drive the jeep with 4 wheel drive
#3 - - bring the GPS - - just in case
#4 - - Don't go in the winter!

HOWEVER, I thought I heard pink say she needed a HOUSE / chicken sitter for a couple of weeks in Feb . . . .ummm . . Let me think about this for a little bit

You could always come chick sit and keep the eggs you collect while I'm gone......what I don't know won't hurt me!!!!

GPS and the like will not save you here....heck we don't have cell service, that stops some 11 miles back. You wanna know the greatest thing about living this far out.....people don't just stop by without prior arrangements or calling first, well of course unless you are my parents.

Many happy hatching vibes being sent over to those eggs Math!

It's not up yet...they're changing it from a page to a group. They asked me to repost my pics on the new page and then there was nothing, no old or new.

French or English? Right now mine are too young maybe in the spring Chase Hope has some laying now but her girls seem to like to go out and visit......

I'm not sure. I think French. I love the look of this rooster. But they said theirs wasn't laying good right now.

That bird isn't the proper color pretty though look here for what it should look like http://frenchmaransclubaustralia.yolasite.com/notes-on-breeding.php and scroll way down the page to find it

They are all beautiful! And I want the scoop on the cocoa egg in your avatar! What a gorgeous egg!

Thank you that egg was from my pullet named Cheepa. She is either wade jean x presley or wade x davis. She had trouble at birth due to one of my incubators and I took her out early and thus the mix up. I am thinking she is wade x presley because I have 3 other female birds that look very much like her that are from that batch. They are all solid glossy black with just a spot of dark copper on thier necks. That was one of her first eggs. I set that egg with a few others and got a very nice bcm cockeral and 2 nice blue copper cockerals from her eggs. I have my bcms and blue coppers all running together. She went broody shortly after I set her eggs so I gave her some other's eggs. Now she has baby chicks but most of them aren't hers LOL! (Broody Drama has been going on here all summer)
Hopefully she will start laying again once her chicks are a little bigger. Any how here is her pic when she was a pullet . I need to take new ones, she has filled out a lot and her comb is a little bigger now.

Original egg photos. I think the avatar may have made it look a little darker. I set this egg and got a BCM cockeral from it. So far he has the dark looks of his momma but with the copper starting to come through on his hackles.
