Marans Thread - breed discussion & pictures are welcome!

I wish I had kept all of my "wheatens" or "sports" that hatched (or whatever they are). Each time, I asked the person I was hatching chicks for if they wanted it for free and they took them. I only kept the last couple of ones I hatched and right now only have one little female running around. Since I know nothing about Wheatens I have no idea if she's "true to form" or not but she's cute and I'll put her with my partial Wheaten male some day when she's grown. When I start my "serious" breeding program in the Spring, pairing them up one-on-one, I'll be sure and note whether or not they are producing the yellow chicks. Of course, if they are, they'll go into a separate breeding program.

The ones I've hatched & kept long enough to know were always much smaller than their black copper hatch mates - have other folks noticed that as well? Gosh, I wish I had some pics...let me go see if I have any...

I'll try and get a picture of my lone girl also and those "in the know" can tell me what she is.

Just updated my blog (main BYC page) with pictures of my older Black Copper Marans. I've included a video from this past weekend in which my oldest roo (currently 12 weeks old) is finally crowing.

The only negative thing I have to say about BCM's is actually a positive - we are very attached to all of them, even the cockerels and the roosters, because of their inherently sweet disposition and their docile nature. I'm currently trying to figure out the best way to get rid of a rooster and a cockerel (we only have three hens, but also three roos) and it's proving to be quite difficult.

We are a vegetarian household and wouldn't be able to use them for meat, although we have no issues when others do this humanely. If anyone has suggestions I'd love to hear them. Otherwise, please enjoy the pictures and video I just posted!

I thouroughly enjoyed your pics, and that crow! How CUTE! - the little olive egger crowing after La Merdes is just the most precious thing ever! And - Lucy - what a cutie pie! I love all the names you chose for little flock, too! Thanks for sharing.

Those are adorable photos BillickChix!

I have a boston terrier who loves baby chicks. I can not trust him, but he will just stare at those babies.

What a manly crow for his first go round! My two both started at exactly 8 weeks, and both sounded like a woman with a cold being strangled
