Thanks for the info. we also have 2 Welsummer pullets who are 6 months old so we weren't sure. Either way my DS(5) is excited since he claimed her as his chicken!

...And in the end, isn't that what matters the most? Sometimes I wish my children were that age again to share this with me! Have fun with the chickens!!!

It's always fun when the kids enjoy something other than TV and handheld games. DD(11) and DS(8) are also into the chickens so you could say it's a family affair-in fact DH built a bigger coop to hold the ones we have now and future ones!

Great! Do you have 4-H or FFA in your area? Maybe now would be a good time to introduce them to stuff like that. Then they can breed chickens, show them, and teach Mom & Dad a thing or two! It sure as heck beats TV, Gameboys, and all the other junk they can get into these days.

It all starts from somewhere, and if they are showing any kind of interest at all, I would encourage them all you can. I sure wish I had a 4-H chapter near me when I was a kid....many, many, many moons ago!

Good, cause believe it or not - - - I get hotter here in north Florida than she does. I am inland, so I don't even get the benefit of the ocean breeze

We do have a 4-H club that they have been members of for 3 years now and I am the general leader for. My DD showed chickens and turkeys for the 1st time this past fair and then both DD and DS(8) showed birds at the Portage WI show in Sept. and did pretty good for the 1st time there too!

ummmmmmmm...........I'm sooooo egg-cited I just have to jump in and share. I finally caught Bills darkest blue daughter lay an egg today.

Culling is not hard for me because we don't kill our birds - - - just relocate them. I treat any culls as a barnyard mix bird. Then I price and market them accordingly. . . . .

The hens - - no matter what they are - - go quickly. There are always people in this area who want POL pullets or just started hens.

The roos are a little harder to get rid of. I gave my EE roo away at the last swap to a lady who had just lost most of her flock due to a tree that blew over on her coop

I sold my "Culled" 4 month old BCM roo for $10 to a lady whose farmyard bcm got snake bit and died.
