Marans Thread - breed discussion & pictures are welcome!

I know the Silicon Sally voice! I find myself doing it back to them when they ask you for answers!

So, would breeding these boat-backed ladies to a roo with a shorter back solve the problem? Like breeding a canoe to a dinghy?

I have been trying to clean out my inbox. The problem is I don't want to delete anything that has breeding advice in it or lists of good breeders to contact later on . . . Oh Decisions Decisions. . . .

Plus, I have down two loads of clothes, made breakfast for the kids ( scrambled eggs and toast), turned my hatching eggs a couple of times, etc. . .Still haven't made it out to the chicken coop yet. I have to go put another load of clothes in the washer and come back and see if you all are talking about "TAILS" yet . . .

Oh by the way, I would love to see some pictures of good tails OR bad tails with pink highlighter on them

Mornin' Lisa! Go into your PM box and print out some of your more pertinent answers maybe? That way you can clean the PM out without losing any info.

This is my opinion of a long/er back. See the pink line (#1) that goes up...I know, I know.....but this is the only way I could think to explain it. See how the line goes up close/near the back of the body and the tail looks as though it starts after that line.....well this to me is a long/er back. I think the tail should start where pink line #1 would intersect with the back, but see line #2 and how his tail looks like it starts out about another inch away from his body. This to me is a long back. If I am off base here and this is not a long back, I hope someone comes by to correct me.
Sorry about the shaky hand....I'm much better with an etch-a-sketch.

Have you ever seen "Limosine cattle?" they have one extra vertibrae and just that one extra makes them look much longer in the back than say a Hereford or Jersey. (No....I don't do cattle.....just pulling ancient information out of storage in the dusty old knoggin' from high school agriculture class....

) I can't recall what makes this happen in chickens wonder if it is the same and that's why some have longer backs.

See this pullet (no pink highlighter you will have to eyeball this one

) her tail starts closer to the body.

Bev Davis stock . . .

SNOWBIRD - - I got to thinking (and yes I do that every once in a while) about those pictures of a few of your bcms.
IT was a REAL PAIN uploading all those pics that I posted today. It took - - like HOURS - - to get them uploaded. So, what I was thinking was that it might be easier if you just emailed them. I don't think you would have to upload them to email them. I really would like to see them . . . I would PM you about this - - -but dang it - - I am at almost max limit on pms and I don't want to delete anything that I have saved.

I am thinking ( oh there I go again - - doing that thinking thing) that I am going to have to get a paid membership soon so that I can enjoy unlimited pm space !

GOOD NIGHT EVERY ONE !

Good Morning Lisa, I did not post that here because i did not know if it was appropiate as this is a discussion thread.. I do not know the gent personally, i was sitting in a hotel scanning the web (my job takes me out of town couple times a week) when I came across his post on craigslist that he had several small flocks of Bev's marans and Johan Barnevelders for sale and i gave him a call.. i ended up buying the flock of wheatens, he still has the flock of BCM's (1 roo 2 hens and 4 chicks) and Barnies (2 roos 4 hens and 7 chicks).. hubby drove down to get our birds (gotta love hubby its 400 miles each way, but he got to see the grandkids in caldwell ;-).. Hubby said Rob has a couple BCM roo's he was not sure he wanted to sell and they were DROP dead gorgeous.. apparently he got the eggs from Bev at nationals in california in 2009.. the barnies came from eggs from Johan. anyhoo ii will PM you his info (you may be able to talk him out of a nice roo)..

Make yourself a new folder on your desktop. Copy and paste the info you want out of your PM's to a word document or what ever your document program is and save it under what ever name you want and put it in that desktop folder. That is what I do and I can just open the folder and see the different docs that I have copied and reference them from there.

Thanks Pink! For some reason, mine look different than both. Don't know how to explain, may have to go get some pics. Looked out the window a few minutes ago, and the three of them were all standing there looking at something, with all tails up!
lol.png
Just wish that look was their normal posture
roll.png
Maybe mine will grow into their backs as they age?? Never knew that about the Limosines, interesting. Out here, if you don't have Angus or black baldies, you might as well stay away from the cattle auctions.

Well I think Don was right, it's not just the photo, my lead roo has a short back...

Number Two has a longer back, but his coloring is messed up...

(red in the breast and the light ring around the hackles, also extremely sparse leg feathering)

I think #1 is still #1.

I have more photos that show long backs and they are better photos, just having a hard time getting them loaded up right now. I will keep at it while I am making Apple Butter this morning.

Pink & ON - okay, I have the same kitchen towel! SWEEEEEEET eggies!!!

Coq, your #1 boy's back isn't too awfully short, I don't think - Don? Is that his natural stance in the pic, it looks to me like he's a bit stretched, as in just before they crow(?) If he's stretched a bit, it might make his back appear to be short. I like him!

Question on egg darkess: I was told that a hen MUST lay at LEAST a 4, never any lighter...i.e., if he lays a 7 at the beginning and then lightens to a 4, that's acceptable, but if she lays less than a 4, even at the end of her lay cycle, she should be culled. Feedback on that?
