Hi Pink

nice to run into you here too!

Question about egg size- is it typically that they lay eggs from the start that are full size? Our Cuckoo has been laying for 4 days now-1 every day and I would say full size-none were small pullet size that you would expect for those just starting.

Chicken from the hood

Love the dustbathing pics too! I had never had the luxury to watch my chickens I had years ago, due to work and children. After 18 years with no chickens at all, I decided to get into Marans. Came into the brooder room from outside one day, and they were all lying in the pose of the last of your pics.

I must've let out a scream and all the chicks jumped to their feet, with a look like, "WTHeck!" Good to be able to laugh about it now

, scared the pants off of me then! Cute little wheaties there, congrats!

PINK

Here is a pic I took from about 25' away, so excuse the fence! They will not act or walk naturally with me in the pen, especially after they all had an inspection today!

Anyway, this is the typical posture of my loooong backed pullets. See the tail set? It really irks me, but what can ya do? Maybe they have longer egg tunnels, so will lay darker eggs??

Can you say Limosine?? What say you?

Glad to add that after inspection, everyone was clean, and man, the pullets are heavy! I need to get a scale and weigh them all, but these gals felt like about 4-5 lbs. at 4 months. Nice and beefy, no boney feeling here! I have spent so much time with handling the roos, that the girls hadn't been handled in awhile. Needless to say, they were NOT happy, and VERY vocal! Poor ole Fuglee was beside himself, every time I picked up one of HIS girls!

Yesterday you asked if we could discuss tails on the females. Here are some random photos of some girls. Please feel free to use these photos for discussion and learning if they will help.

This gal does not normally stand like this...in this photo she has an ever watchful eye on my cat Oatmeal just on the other side of the fence. I think this hen has a long back. She's molting can you tell?

Debbi~

I can't really see through the fencing that good. She does kinda look long but that could be the angle in which she was standing when you got the photo.
