Absolutely they contribute something...I have crossed my Marans roosters over Barred Rocks and Buff Orpingtons and the birds produced from those crosses lay a darker egg like that of the Marans but they are not as dark. They might be a 4 and at best during the peak of their lay cycle they might reach a 5. I just can't help but be fascinated by the other info in that article about eggs themselves.

We finally got our severe weather last night, and it came with a vengence!

2:40 this morning, it sounded like the typical tornado description you hear everyone on TV saying, "sounded like a freight train passing by!" Holy cow! I woke out of a dead sleep, and before I knew it I was in the kitchen. The wind was roaring, and I could hear stuff blowing around. Looked out the kitchen window to see if the coop was still standing, and thank God, it was. The real heavy wind only lasted about 10 minutes, then the deluge of rain came. Lots of lightning too, my favorite

Finally got back to sleep about 5:00am. Don't know if it was just the big cold front coming through, or if another funnel cloud was passing over my house. Sounded just like the last one about 14 years ago, but this time I faired much better. Going out to the coop this morning, did a quick inspection, and except for a few branches, all looked ok. Hopefully, that's the end of that nonsense for awhile, but some of our worst storms come in the winter months, so I won't hold my breath. One storm at a time... Hang on Dave, it's headed your way!

I agree, I crossed a BCM roo with several RIR girls and the eggs are a nice brown, not the barely beige of the mothers. Plus, the olive colored eggs def. change color. Maybe birds are different or we need to share our own research with the bird people? Interesting, someone must do a study.

Any suggestions of some good(but not expensive)genetic books to read, especially for those of us just getting into this and have been a good number of years out of college and needs refreshing?

My favorite book on poultry is by MORLEY JULL, Poultry Breeding, very cheap.
