Marans Thread - breed discussion & pictures are welcome!

I think that feathering is Ideal!!!! really... Unless they develop feathers on the inside toes I wouldn't worry too much.. Sometimes they end up losing some as they mature... I LOVE THEM RUSTY.. SOOOO CUTE!!! I am starting to feel.... hatchy.

I bought what I thought were 2 cuckoo marans chicks at the feed store... well, they look like smutty barred rocks. By that, I mean they are barred but darker on the light parts. AND now, they have laid their first eggs yesterday and today, and the eggs look like BR eggs. Not dark at all. I know they aren't BR but.... anyone have any experience with these kind of Marans?

Awww thanks Geebs! I thought I read somewhere (and there is so much reading everywhere that I can't remember where) but... that too much feathering wasn't good. So it's just the inside toes that's not ok then.

Thank you!!!!

I am taking Pinks way of hatching. If they do they do and if they don't then they don't. But they are! I want to be done but it's hard to eat the eggs knowing what's inside LOL so I keep throwing them in the incubator... I have them and Light Sussex coming out my ears.

Pretty normal for hatchery birds though I've gotten a couple who have darkened up and lay a 4/5 every time. Mine lay very large eggs 5 out of 7 days waiting on my breeder ones to start laying they hatched from 7 eggs they're looking close

Thanks geeds. I was thinking the u would not be possible / realistic if we use a roo with a 45 degree tail. When the roos were prefered to have higher tails than the u would be a likely result. . . . But over time that u would become obsolete if we were using roos with much lower angles . . . Just my thoughts . .

Pink - I did point out the dark olives to Dh last night

Here is the funny, I think I have that platter myself.

Coverts - - - are they all over the chicken or just in certain places ? ? ?

Hello everyone, I am new to Marans. I purchased 4 pullets from a local guy over a month ago. He said they'd be laying by now but I am still on egg watch. No problem, I know they will lay when ready. My question is(sorry if this has been discussed before, but too many post to go thru)my BCMs have no feathers on thier legs, is this any indication for not getting those dark brown eggs I am waiting for? Thanks in advance.

You would not have to go to far back on that topic - - -we just talked about feathers or the lack of feathers yesterday . .

Niether are indictative of dark egg laying ability!

It is like comparing a short haired and long haried daschund. They are both daschunds. They both have the same body style. The only difference is the length of hair.

With marans (BCM), the feather legged variety was known as a French BCM and the clean legged ( no feathers) was known as an English BCM. THE AMERICAN styled proposed standard is calling for feathered legs.

Usually people refer to the wing when talking about covert feathering. I guess technically it could apply to the tail as well. The only reason I know anything is because we have had so many parrots, finches, lovebirds etc etc. lol. I guess I have had chickens on and off since I was five but not in a technical kind of way lol.

Look at this picture of covert feathering on the wing and you can kinda get an idea.
