Marans Thread - breed discussion & pictures are welcome!

Maybe I am just strange, but it seems that the chicken social order is very much like ours. That is one of the reasons I enjoy watching the birds.

Especially where roosters are concerned!!!!

I had two hatch last night. Current count is 10 marans and 6 delawares. . . There is another maran piping. I hope to see it emerge from the shell by lunch time!

Way to go Lisa. Congrats!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I've posted this pic before, and sorry about the mud...but, this is the girl that laid the egg in my avatar (which was a very strong "7" on the scale....not QUITE an 8). She's pure Davis, and she has no brown fluff or white anywhere:

I also have a few others that look very similar...those are the ones who laid the eggs that Illia speaks of a few pages back that were very, very dark (I believe those are mine in her avatar, too).

The problem that I'm seeing in my small flock is the hens without the "brown fluff under the vent" that you talk of so much, Don, also lack color in the hackles. That's my biggest issue right now - lack of hackle color.

I have a few wheatens. Mostly males lol. I am working on building up a decent sized flock. I know there are a few people who used to post here that had wheatens. Berkley Springs and nivtup both used to post about thier wheatens there are probably others but I can't think of them right now lol.

I think the BC get most of the attention because they are the first trying to get into the SOP. I have some decent wheaten and they are my favorite of all the Marans and I believe we will find that they will be more uniform when breeding. The problem I find with Wheatens is trying to increase the genetic Pool. I might try a cross with another variety of Marans and see if that helps. Don

Of my four FBCM hens, only one has color in the hackles, the rest are just black. That's the main reason I felt I needed the roo with color.

Wynette , I believe the same as you on the hackle color if we don't have the brown soft feathering. I am in the process of mating some up at the moment all single matings. I intend to use all the female in single matings , so will have to use a few at a time because of not enough males. I am putting all my female on Photobucket this weekend so anyone can take a look, i will picture their eggs and chick as I go along. I believe I can make some culls real early. Will not cull any of these first single mated until the study is over. I plan on doing an egg index also. Anyone can use this info. I post anyway you would like. Would like the study to be as thorough as possible. Don
