As some of you know I am raising three chicks together that I hatched together. From hatching eggs from Wynette. I have two olive egger that are black copper Marans the daddy and my real BCM chick all together. They are four weeks tomorrow. The straight combed from olive eggs chick is a boy, he has a really large comb since before he was 2 weeks old (it just keeps on getting bigger) and now he is getting the neck feathers in copper strongly comming in already. The real BCM chick has no colored neck feathers coming in yet at all. The comb is much smaller and not red. Last week (at 3 weeks) I posted pictures of it here and everyone that commented guessed pullet on the BCM chick. I am wondering if the lack of early neck feathing is a sign of pullets in BCM or doesn't necessarily mean anything at all. Honestly the one from olive eggs that is 3/4 BCM as its second generation the BCM daddy looks so much like the real thing. I am betting he grows up to look just like a BCM, maybe not a great one by the standard with the easter egger in him but BCM looking just the same. But I wouldn't be keeping him, my real interest is how the BCM chick is going to turn out, especially if she is a pullet.

I have only seen the white hackle undercoat after the Juve molt. I can't say it is not there earlier though. In the past I did not really look at the feathers before the Juve molt, I will cull for it now regardless of when I see it. Don

Was out with the flock awhile ago, and noticed something I hadn't connected before.

Is there any corralation to white primaries in juveniles and lack of feathered shanks??

I noticed that my heavily feathered shanked boys have very little in the way of white anything. The others have strong white primaries, to the point where they look like saddle shoes when flying around, and little to no shank feathering. Is there a gene connection between the two? Seems like I see something new every day with these guys, and new questions pop up. These chicks in question are right at 8 weeks.

Now that I look back, it seems to be the same for my other two clutches too. Anyone else see this??
