Marans Thread - breed discussion & pictures are welcome!

whew.. here ya go ThePoint

Number 5… I am not liking this to fit into the standard as his conformation isn’t fantastick.. He has a good copper balance however his feathers on the undercoating are mousy, however this could improve with age… Overall a better bird than number 1 and 2 but I still prefer 3 to this one and even number 4 has a better conformation overall. I really am not fond of the eye on this bird and that is really important to me as it passes to the offspring. So this one has too many things against it though it has great copper balance in general.

Number 6.. Well you were holding out… This bird has a GREAT outline..I love the legs and feathering He has moved my choice to the number one spot putting the other second choice the number 3 bird and the number 3 choice the number 4 bird… I like his comb, his eyes, his horn color, shanks, ear coverts COPPER BALANCE The amount of melaniser in this bird is VERY VERY GOOD I would like to see how wide and deep this bird gets.. The picture from the front makes him look wisp but I suspect that is not the case here as the side picture shows more width in the back… time will tell for sure but this is a hands down top choice.

Number 7 I would hold this one in reserve and wait to see what happens..This bird could take the place of my number 2 pick at a later time. For now I don’t think I could give him fair assessment…He would be one to watch.. He possess a wide back…his tail has yet to develop so I would want to see him again He is narrow… His copper balance is EXCELLENT and I may even be able to overlook the fleck in his correctly colored eye…I do not however know if I could overlook the white feathers in the feet in a finished bird. It would depend largely on the quality of the hens.

Number 8 I would reject if I had correctly colored hens but would retain if my hens lacked proper coloring… He has a lot to offer in stature and general shape…he has the most attractive head of the group with a nice long skull… I have trouble liking his eye for the flecking… He has correctly colored covert on the ears good horn, amazing comb.

Overall a very consistent pen of cockerels.. Thanks so much this grouping appears to be all from the same breeder who has done a nice job. You have a good one or two out of the group to work with. I didn’t see anything in this last group that would make me cry stewpot if this was all I had to work with…Kudos to the breeder… I really like number 6 for my top pick and am on the rail with a couple others… I would hold them as long as I could even Robin Red breast here… The hens will dictate the choices.. This group of 4 had pretty consistent confirmation.

Hey, I am learning something!

what are you learning???? did you see the number 6 bird??? I think the copper balance on that bird is spectacular... I haven't seen hardly any bird on here that have such even color across the back... nice kudo here. In fact the number 3 bird was spectacular that was as well... I just felt the outline and general impression of bird number 6 surpassed bird 3 in it's seamless appearance on how the tail attached.. the bird number 3 appear a little clumsy in that transition but still better than any of the other choices.

Walt what makes number 4 a more optimal choice in your mind? What is it you see??? (just curious).. We did pick the same birds but in a different priority.

Walt I had to edit.. It is late and I wrote number 4 when I meant three... I am sorry about that... My post must not have made a whole lot of sense but after looking again I am not as crazy about number 3 for a roach back type appearance.. I am giving another look to the second set in the morning to come up with number 2 bird... Sorry all.. Too tired to be typing...

Beautiful chicks.

This post reminded me of something that has been on my mind for quite some time and that is the likelihood that some US Marans are about to be contaminated by EE/Ameraucana blood when one of these Olive Egger birds slips through the cracks. I have a pullet counterpart to your single-combed Olive Egger cockerel. She looks like a beautiful BC Marans, but is in fact an Olive Egger mutt that did not pick up the pea comb or blue egg gene. She is capable of laying a #4 from time to time, but usually just lays a chalky, rough and paintless egg because she does not have any paint for the finish coat. Just FYI, on the first backcrossing of F1 Olive Eggers back to Marans, only half will be Olive Eggers, the rest should be straight-combed and it's imperative that we make sure they don't get into a Marans breeding program. Stay frosty.

By the way, Hi Everybody! Long time lurker here.

Welcome Darth egger!!! Good to know... thanks!!! Do you have marans??? If so what kind?

I went just by their bodies, not color. No 6 looks like it has better color, but it appears that the legs are too close together. The body is the most important part of the bird.

Ya I saw the same thing and gave credit to the way it was standing.. good point.
