He just needs that extra "manly" aura about him, that extra chest and slightly upright posture. . .

Thanks Illia. I know he has more copper than what you may ideally be looking for but my hens are lacking in that department so I'm hoping to get the right balance. I added a pic that better shows his chest. I do agree he needs to be slightly bigger but I think he will be close to weight. I will be weighting him next week so I can really know where he's at.

He also has really nice feathering on his shanks (something I need more of in my flock)

I use Neomycin treated absorbant board from Cutler's supply. will send you a pm and explain how I do my chicks. Don

your babies should never get sick like that...if you have a proper clean brooder, etc...and as far as any thing else is concerned I use sand. It is non-flammable, and soaks up the heat from the infrared..the babies need sand anyways and it is easy to clean.
I use a small plastic bucket with drilled tiny holes in it to sift poopies out
But really when the brooder has that many poopies in it, it needs to be cleaned, so I get my 5 gallon bucket and child's sand shovel out and clean up the poopy sand, cart it to the compost, dump.
Then I add new, clean sand.
When they are older, like 2 months or so, I use shavings...and even newborns I have never had babies eat shavings and die....I use an 50 X 50 mix of red cedar and white curls...which Illia and I both have great access to being here on the coast of WA.
Red cedar repells bugs, and white cedar repells bugs and both smell so good and absorp so much liquid and such.
Excellent baby bedding, or for grown chickens.
If your babies are infested with coccidiosis, then give them Corrid in their water...so what is the antibiotic panel for ???????????
Does the germs stick to the panel or does the antibiotic soak into their feet ?
I really am interested in how it works ?
Not meaning to be uppity..just seriously curious..

Well I hope your chickies do well for you and give you some good prospects.I was so lucky in that out of 13 chicks 9 were pullets.The first Marans I bought last year ended up being 5 cockerels so they went to the freezer.I was so disappointed.That Murphy's law for sure.Now that I think about it I'm glad in a way.After being one of "those stalkers" of this Marans thread(before I ever joined) the eggs would probably not been dark anyway.They were from a hatchery.

You are smart to take your notes etc.I was too excited about mine to even think of such.

Hi All! I don't know if anyone here would be interested but yesterday someone posted an incubator on sale for $99.I don't know anything about bators but several ppl responded they had one or several and really liked it.I was tempted and I probably won't even have my own babies.LOL
