Marans Thread - breed discussion & pictures are welcome!

I have two great, HUGE Wheaten Marans Roos that I hatched from Bay Horse Bonne's eggs. They are nice, calm and quiet, and I mean huge. I should weigh them. I love the eggs they came from too, HUGE eggs, fairly dark. Her eggs are all giant sized and very rounded. Don't give up, I think there are plenty of nice Wheatens.

ranchhand~ Oh you must build another coop..or two!

We all love them, be they show birds, dark eggie birds, pet birds, funky birds, or what ever, they are all Marans. We all want the same thing, and that would be the beautiful eggs, the beautiful birds, and the pleasure they give us! Get some and enjoy!!

geebs is good with critiques. She must have just overlooked it.

Hi OSU man. I think he has nice coloring. His leg feathering is also good. At first I thought his eyes looked dark but I looked harder and I am thinking they are orange? I can't tell from the angle of the way your roo is standing if his comb is correct or not. It looks okay from the angle he is at (not too many points etc) The only thing I see that might mark him off if you were showing him is that maybe his tail might be a little high. Then again is may just be how he is standing in the pic. He looks real proud of himself lol. It is so hard to judge just by one photo and I am certainly not an expert I hope some others can give a little more expert opinion.

Ok im going to go out and get some more pics. He is a really proud roo.

Good morning all... bracing for a storm here... Keep your head down Pink....Never did hear a peep about the earthquake.. you must be pulling my leg...(JK).. I was up waaay to late last night... well till 6 this morning... Just couldn't sleep...I gotta go out and put up some heat lights..gonna get cold around here... No frostbite this year I hope.. Poor babies last year got smashed with fallng net (snowload) and all kinds of trouble.

Lotzahenz:
I hope you got some girls to go with the boys... The BHB are really the bomb... I keep that line as well... Nice birds...friendly and hardy... easy on the eye also... I have a black copper carrying wheaton that I just got... I also have two others that I aim to try out... If there is anyone in my area wanting to use a overmelanised (just slightly) BC carrying wheaton to develope some wheaton.. Give a shout... He is free for the taking...

Charmins eggs are off the hook... What consistency... Nice squared!!!

lotzahens your wheaten roos sound like mine. The eggs are huge from my wheaten girl too and so were the ones they all came from. Jumbo size lol.
I consider the wheaten roos in general, to be gentle giants. They think they are lap roosters. I have 3 wheaten roos total. One was born kinda small and has a foot problem but he has really caught up. This smaller one, (his name is Sweetie Pie) has a shoe anti-fetish. Everytime I wear a different pair of shoes into his pen he will notice right away. He hates new shoes!!
He will follow me around with his head down ..looking at the new/different shoes and wait to attack them. He never bites my toes or anything if I am wearing sandals, just the shoe lol. The next day of wearing the new shoes, it is all good. If I change them again, then he hates them.

OSUman: don't feel disheartened. Most all of us have roosters that are not perfect. It seems it is much easier to get a good hen than a rooster. Just learning more about what they are supposed to look like will help you in chosing which faults to breed out and what you want to breed in. We are all here to learn from each other and hopefully eventually create nicer stock than we already have.

Okay then... Good to see the eye isn't as dark as it looked in the first pix... This makes me like him more... and the hackle color is different also... That is more to the normal realm for the other mitigating factors.. Thanks for posting additional pictures.. It is hard to critique a bird based on one picture!!! I would select hens with a long back... He is likely to improve the hen next to him color wise...... Good deal!!! I still think he carries some hidden color genes based on the balance being toward too much melaniser... just slightly and the shafting in the feathers and the gold... We shall see how he matures...

Freaks?? Wish I could find some Free pallets around here! Seems they bring a premium price here. After this summer's fiasco with trying to build the coop, I copped out and bought this cheapy. If not for the quality, it was more for the "easy" factor. So much for easy!

Here is another suggestion - - - make some phone calls to fencing companies. Some companies save the wood fence panels when they take them down to replace them. . . I got a trailer load of them for a $25 loading fee. They were 8 ft tall fence panels and Dh used them to make my current coop. He re-inforced the fence panels with 2 x4's. This works wonderful in FLORIDA because we have so much HEAT. The fence panels have built in spacing for circulation. In the winter, I staple cardboard to the inside of the fence panels. That stops the drafts and adds an insulation factor to the coop.
