Marans Thread - breed discussion & pictures are welcome!

regarding something YOU had a big hand in, I believe you would be be a bit taken aback by it as well.

Let's all try to remember why we are here - to move this breed forward. We are all on the same page on that....at least I think we are! Even if you don't agree with the proposed standard, at least you have a framework to go by.

Wynette, the comments that were made were about the Wheatem Proposed Standard and I wish you would read them and then decide what you think. Everyone thinks they can submit anything as a proposed standard and then chande it after acceptance, this is not the way it works and I tell you it is hard to change a standard once it is approved.

I have tried my best to help with the Marans with what I know but will not let someone come on here anytime they like and trash me, this is about the fourth time and I am tired of it.

I plan on taking a break and wish everyone the best with your Marans. Don

Don, I don't think she was "trashing" you - regardless of which color, at least it's been written and we have nowhere to go but up from here.

I can't speak to changing a standard directly as I've never been invovled in doing so - apparently you have - please enlighten us!! What is involved, how long does it take, who gets a say....etc.?

Wynette, Once a Standard is approved by the APA the Marans club would have to petition the APA and they would turn it over to I believe the Standard revisions Committee and they would rule on the proposed changes. Walt, would be better to comment on this as he is involved. I don't know if this is done at the Semi-annual and National both. Don

Wow it is cold outside.... got my pens divided... Does anyone want to do a X-mas marans hatch with me... ya know..Merry X=mas to me... Oh I guess that would be happy birthday... Well my birthday isn't in December so I guess it will have to be Christmas..

Any takers?? C'mon Pink.. I know you can do a few chickies.. think I will run two or three and just get it over with..

Good morning everybody!!! well afternoon to some of you guys... Bev was on...dang..missed it.. Morning Bev if you are still here!!!

Anyone going to any shows... i got so excited about the Ohio postings... wanna know when the next big "fix" is..

I see we are looking at wheaton...I must admit I have never read the standard for that.. gotta go look.

Where did everybody go??? I hear an echo....echo....echo....

I have a marans that I got from BHB that was black at birth and now has a brown triangle on the wing... I am thinking there is a little wheatie in that...

Is it a bad idea to get a female wheaton and breed with it or is that just a bad idea... Don??? I don't think I would want to use black copper because they could get mixed up and my girls thusfar haven't throw me wheaton.... Does the female have to carry a gene for wheaton to throw them... I would think so.. but the offspring would likely look marans and have a wheaton gene correct???

Harris5.. about the bird you posted... Very attractive bird... If I were going to evaluate him as a breedng candidate I would look at length of back... I think it could be a little longer.. I would definetly want BOTH legs.. LOL . His head and eye is really nice..comb is nice...I personally like a little more red in a breeder to help put enough red/copper in the females... Unless you females are already really good colored he will do little to improve them.. Nice feathering...I like a shorter tail... just me.. GREAT photograph.... Good quality camera... man I am jealous...still can't find where I misplaced mine.. If you use him on long backed hens the offspring would be bettered... and also hens that are a little overcolored would help.. I am using an overmelanised rooster BHB and two Cree girls that are undermelanised.. I just devided them.. I will post pics of the results in the spring..
