Lisa, In my very limited experience with chickens if I had to pick one amount of time for the juve molt I would say 16 weeks and this will vary either way a small amount. Don

Next question too please.

I think that what looks like they are molting twice is that sometimes it seems they are loosing feathers forever. If you have several young fowl in a pen or brooder it can take 4-6 weeks for them all to molt as Juve. Even with the adult molt they will have a graduated molt within the group unless you force molt them. Don

Hi Pink

I don't think it was even brought up. This is what it says in the French standard

Four long and well separated toes with the outer one sparsely feathered.
The claws are white or horn- coloured

We are trying to set our standard to be as close to their's as possible.

MathAce: I wouldn't worry too much about the white leg feathering right now. I have had some bcm with white leg feathering when they were young chicks and they have black now. If they are males its gonna take you a while usually before you know for sure how thier copper is going to come in anyways. Better to cull late than too early.

Okay, so today was our first (and probably earliest ever) snow of the winter, so I decided to share some photos of how the Marans boys are taking it. . .

First is the worst. This is my (ridiculous) Wheaten cockerel, hunkered halfway under the safety of a cover. The other half of him. . . Pretty cold, I bet.

However, my Blue Wheaten is taking the snow pretty well. . .

This guy's the smartest though. This is my Black Copper cockerel from Wynette, fully protected by a black plastic cover over the breeding pen. (which is fully accessible to any of the boys)

Love the photos Illia. It snowed here today too! We did not have very much though. Thanks for the pics.

Pretty birds.

Illia ~ The Blue Wheaten boy could be your Christmas (or whatever holiday) card, that's pretty! BCM boy may be covered, but he does not look pleased!

The Wheaten in the first pic is still on the fence about it!

I love snow! I would love it if it snowed just a little here this winter. Your blue wheaten guy sure makes a pretty photo against the snow. Lol @ that first pic!
