Marans Thread - breed discussion & pictures are welcome!

We are due for snow overnight they say... They are frequently wrong so I hope this is one of those times... I don't mind snow in January... but in November.. it makes for a long winter.

This weeks forcast is highs in the twenties and lows in the lower teens... With snow all week.....Hello Ice and snow:rolleyes:.. We will see open water again on the lakes in mid April to mid May..

I am a little south of the Lake Superior snow belt so we only get about 100" a year verses 200 to 300 inches an hour or so north..
Just about time to wax the skis to go feed the chickens..

I can't even fathom that!!! We had 70* weather here today, but will be paying for it come Thanksgiving day. Highs in the 30s, low 20. The chicklets will be in the big coop for Thanksgiving, to heck with the paper towel coop kit!

By the way, do you have any adult/recent photos of the cockerel in your avatar? That feather shanking is just amazing, and I'd love to see him more grown up.

Illia, I haven't taken pics of them since that one, I really need to! "Clyde", in the avatar, is a big boy, but very dark and very little coppering showing so far. His brother, "Roy" is my pick of the three cockerels, has the same shank feathering, a lot of dark copper showing already, and starting to get in some saddle color; they are 10 weeks old. Will try to get some pics of them all this next week.

Edit: I just looked up the pic, and Clyde, avatar, is 6 weeks in that pic

As far as looking for thoughts on how soo to cull for white feathers: I like to wait till they are young adults around 20 to 24 weeks to see if anything changes. I recently culled a very nice BCM roo that had many good qualities, excellent size, conformation, good copper coloring, nice shank feather, eye color, tail angle, etc. Except at about 16 weeks he started getting a partially white tail feather. By 26 weeks he had 2 full and 1 partial white tail feathers. A very nice bird I had hoped to breed that ended up in the crockpot with potatoes, carrots, onions and seasonings.

Whoa Dave! I hope he was as tasty as he was good looking?? Did you keep back a brother??

Debbi,

Hope I don't offend anyone with that comment. But on my small farm, the culls that are full size adults go to feed my family and yes we love eggs for breakfast and egg dishes, ( friatta's, quiches, cassoroles, baked goods).

I wish I had the brother, oh how I wish. I am working on that angle. He had so many things going right. Especially size and conformation. I see some BCM roos pictured that appear to be scrawny.

I do have other younger BCM roos that I am watching, just not his brother.
