Yipee!!!!!!!! So happy for you.............. How old is she? I can't wait til mine start laying. Maybe it will be my Christmas present..LOL

I think I'd figured it as either 33 or 34 weeks old when she finally started. Her 2 sisters (hatched at the same time) have yet to start

Oh, I did, I did. I am a talker by nature & this breeder was so nice. His birds were his 4H project when he was about 10 & has had them ever since. When he was in college, I think he said, He & his dad went into partnership & still are today. Beautiful birds & my grand daughter took to the "girls" immediately. Poor thing, she is afraid of the rooster................all roosters. One of my big Cuckoo Marans took after her when she was just a toddler.................I think it scared her for life. He (the rooster) was in chicken heaven within 5 minutes. I DO NOT deal well with mean animals.
There was no snow on our trip but lots of heavy rain, but I grew up with it & am fine with it.

While researching this problem, I found where it can be common in NEW LAYERS or OLD HENS. So, hopefully it will go away on its own for you.

It is harmless, but disgusting. We use a spoon and scoop it out of the egg - - - once it is in the pan.

OK, here is a dumb question. If you put a cuckoo marans roo over a leghorn hen do you get brown egg layers?

If your cuckoo has a dark gene it is possible....Do it and let us know... Don't know why you would cross em.. To have a flighty bird that doesn't lay as much???

It will not be a dark egg layer like marans...

Cool,
I love having birds that start laying now.. My Marans started a month and a half ago and are just a hammering out the eggs... Like it is spring time...

Egg color gets better every day.. Still get those rough ones with out the final coat of spay paint on them.. but the egg size and color just keeps getting better.. AND we have single digit temps this week...

Of course all the older birds say na, time to molt and take a little break....

Congrats on the new eggs..

I'm not going to cross them, I don't like white eggs. I was just curious. surely you aren't saying they would lay fewer eggs from having leghorn put into them.

No, she's saying you would have fewer eggs by putting a Cuckoo to a Leghorn! You may get "tinted" eggs, but why?? If you don't like white eggs, sell the Leghorns and get all Marans or some other brown laying breed. JMHO

Also her frequent eggs are a nice blue, not as dark as a pure AM but not white..

Of course it can work the other way too like Geebs stated...
