Marans Thread - breed discussion & pictures are welcome!

Cheryl I'm no expert on Sussex, nor anything, but I think its more important with Marans to maintain pure lines due to the complicated natures of everything regarding them. But i also think that if you mix them, you get a mess for a time but then can be on to some amzing things.

These were nothing special, I don't even know which 'lines' they are. I got them from a member called bigredfeather, I traded quail eggs for them. I mainly wanted the dark eggs, no one in my area has these so they'd be good sellers

ETA: Also from Ohio. To my knowledge this person only had black coppers.

Cheryl, how I handle it since I also have limited room is that mine run together until I'm ready to breed; then, I have a separate pen that I do not regularly use - I pull out the ones I want to test breed with and put them in a separate pen. Kind of a pain, as you have to wait a full 3 weeks before they will be completely clear of any other roo they've been with, but it works for me.

another way is to raise the roosters together and the hens together and pull out for mating... like a chicky chicky love shack!!!

Roos that are raised together..preferrably in a pen full of breakfast layers...so everyone is happy... works real good.

I checked it out, not the same person.

I have been asked to post some photos of the pullets from Greenfire Farms. They will be 5 months old on Dec. 14th.

This one has dark eyes, but IMO one of the best pullets out of the whole bunch. I love her copper. Darn the dark eyes. Excuse the funky feather, I was chasing the little escape artist so she's a little fluffed up in places from running through the underbrush.

This is the pullet that was favored most by Don and Geebs, the last time I put photos of them up. Will try to get a better photo of her, and she is the one snooping and clucking around in the nest box, along with the first pullet with dark eyes.
