Marans Thread - breed discussion & pictures are welcome!

Yes, it's pretty in it's own right, but I want the dark, ruby, glossy eggs! That's my idea of a BCM eggie! Even though the 8s & 9s are the goal, I really like the reddish 7+ ones better. Speckle, schmeckle...give me RUBIES!!!!!!!!!!!

I find Wade Jean are more round and very dark (but the birds aren't always the best.)

I find Bev Davis to be pretty good, too, but it really depends on her direct stock vs someone who bred birds from her stock.

Grisam and Presley I'm not sure of, but I think that's where a lot of the neat red coloring and blotchiness comes from.

Got a flashlight the other day at Orschline's for $17.00. It's an LED that puts out 180 lumens! This sucker is bright!! I just candled my darker eggs (5+) and can see through them like a white egg, so there is hope for this candling darker eggs. For those who don't want to spend a fortune on a candler or flashlight, this may be for you. It is made by Dorcey

Thanks for the tip Debbi. Did it say how long the battery life is ? ?

Lisa, I think the package said 5 hours, I would assume that to be constant useage? It uses 4 AA batteries, the bulb will last longer than you or me!

Yes, I didn't either. The package does warn not to look into the light as it can cause eye damage! It is BRIGHT!! I shined it out back tonight, and it lit up the coop to where the chooks were clucking, and past it into the woods, about 250' from the porch. Good bang for the buck in my opinion!

That does sound bright! I have motion security lights out by our coops because they are so far back from the house. It gets so dark out there that even with a ordinary flashlight I muddle around until I can trip the security lights so I can actually see lol. I went out there earlier tonight and heard lots of hooting from owls. It seems like they come around every few weeks or so.

I've seen some flashlights on ebay with 900- 1200 lumens! Gosh, I can't even believe what those could put out! Of course, you're going to pay waaaay more than 17 bucks for them too! I need to get a motion sensored light out here in the back and front. Will the beam from the flashlight set off the motion sensor?? I'm in total darkness out here which I love, until i need light fast!
