I would rather get advice from my trusted friends on the Marans thread than
post this question on the emergency and illness forum - - -
So, here is the question:
Does anyone have experience with bumblefoot ?
I have a hen that I have been working with for 2 - 3 weeks and I don't seem to be winning the battle with bumblefoot.
We soaked the foot in water with epsom salt. We removed the scab and removed the bumblefoot. We got lots of thick puss out.
We did the iodine rub, neosporin packed in the abysis and then bandage the foot. We soaked her foot in epsom salt and repeated the iodine, neosporin, and bandage process nightly for a few nights.
We thought she was on the way to healing and released her to the flock. My bad - - should of waited. We checked her foot after a few days with the flock and it did not look better. We brought her back inside and did the whole thing over again - -
soaked, iodine, removed scab - - - just a little puss was found this time - - iodine, neosporin, re-pack.
This time I used tylan 50 right in the wound and put her on a 3 day dose of it orally too. Also, soaked, iodined, neosporin, and rebandaged.
She is eating, drinking and laying eggs. SQUAWKS her head off about being separated from the flock. She is a very naughty leghorn who does not believe I should be messing with her!
NOW, I have started Duramycin. She has been on it 2 days. We looked at the foot tonight and it seems hard under the scab. I don't want to open it again it I don't have too.
ANY ADVICE ? ? ?
By the way, this chicken has taken to covering herself up with the mulch in the dog carrier that I keep her in at night. Have you ever seen a chicken pick up mulch piece by piece and throw it on her back ? ? ? Any idea if that is an "I'm content" or "I'm stressed" message ? ? ?
