Marans Thread - breed discussion & pictures are welcome!

Don~ I can say that I do not use the color chart except for determining whether or not an egg is a 4. If they are a 4 or anything more than that I keep the bird that lays it...BUT.....I look for all things considered in a breeder not just egg color. This slows the process down considerably but is the only way I have found to keep a sort of even keel in breeding and not losing everything such as type and variety color and patterns. I will gladly accept a #4 egg because it means that they are still a Marans but the norm here for my birds runs between a 4-6 with the occassional darker egg but I have never never never had an 8 or 9. I will take the slow road anyday so I don't lose everything. Breeding birds is like a marriage it takes work no matter what we started out with if we are determined to make it work.

Kim, I like a dark egg also, and would not set a real light egg under any circumstances. I see people all the time saying they have 8-9 eggs. It is really hard to tell from pictures as the camera has a lot to do with how dark. I do not have a problem with any color Marans I have as even the Cuckoo and White lay at least a 5-6 on the egg scale.

The only reason for the post was to see what people are breeding for in their Marans. I pretty much no what the regulars are going for.

Don,
I personally started my whole Marans adventure just chasing the darkest egg. That was a year & 1/2 ago. I have since then evolved to trying to breed towards conformation & SOP. Of course I am in my infancy on this & find that all of you are very willing to share your knowledge & experience but it is still difficult to get "good" birds to start with. So............... I may be a very long time getting anything that is up to standard. In the meantime anything that doesn't show promise for that goal goes to the layer pen & will not be bred or is given away or sold as pet quality only.

Thank you....we are all quite excited. We went to the doctor yesterday and they told us August 16th but we think they don't know how to count..our guess is more like September. The doctor thinks she is 6.5 weeks but...she believes she is only about 4 weeks max. Her fiance is so cute...just hovers over her every move.

I didn't get to do the NY hatch so I am not locking down with the rest of you but my new Brinsea did arrive yesterday. I have up to this point only had second hand old wafer types or little styro incubators & did what I could with them. I am excited, but also a little intimidated. I am not into all the electronic gadget things. Thank Goodness my husband is. I have no eggs to hatch now but maybe by the time I do I will be comfortable with this new wonderful machine.I am hoping to help my grand daughter's 4H group with their wish list. I, of course, want more Marans for myself but am also looking for some good Black Jersey Giants for a 4Her. As soon as my girls start laying again I will try yo set some first generation Olive eggers. I have a beautiful EE rooster that I can cover some of my Marans with I guess or my BCM rooster can over some of my EE hens to try.............alot of fun is ahead I am sure....LOL

So sorry for your loss Geebs. I hope she shows up. Your place is beautiful & after seeing your lake I will try not to complain about my muddy mucky mess. I wear my lime green garden galoshes & wade through the puddles to get to the pens & keep adding straw to the run area to make things a little better. I for one can't wait for Spring. I used to get cabin fever over wanting to be able to get out & garden.............Now,......it's all about chickens.LOL

It sounds like most of the people on this thread use bigger boxes than I do but mine work fine. I turn PVC 5 gallon buckets upside down with their lids on & cut a large arched opening in them starting above the double rim. The rims hold the bedding in place (on the most part. Some hens are more athletic than others). My ducks even use these nest boxes sometimes & they are alot longer than my chickens. Alot of the time I see 2 of my Heritage Delawares that I got from Lotsapaint using one nestbox at the same time. How they fit in there I don't know but I have had no broken eggs...........LOL

Berk~ there is nothing wrong with your girlz' eggs....I think they are beautiful, I love all Marans eggs. Everyone of them has their own unique beauty and that is what makes Marans special IMO. As Don has stated many times......breed for what you love, that simple. If it makes you smile then that's all that matters.

Pink,
As has been said here often. We all have to start somewhere & you put alot of effort into doing the right thing. Your customers will love your fuzzies & can have a start themselves. I wish I had more & better but am Happy to have at all & will just go from here & try to get better. As said, it is a process & you are giving them an opportunity of a lifetime.
