Marans Thread - breed discussion & pictures are welcome!

Hi, will give you what I can see from the picture. The female appear to have white ear lobes, the Male is very short in Back, male has very short legs, male sickles are extra long and make the tail look larger than it really is. With the one female having white legs something has been mixed in . Male does appear to have a nice rounded chest, the short back throws off the TYPE. Don

Don, the females don't have white ear lobes, may have been my picture taking skills. Do you think I should get rid of these and just worry about the FBCM?

I never tell someone else what to do with their fowl. Depends on how long and how much work you are prepared to do. Myself I culled all the Marans with major faults, it costs the same to feed a good one as it does to feed a cull. Don

Yep, days getting longer and some of the freeloaders, that would be some of my layer hens, have commenced laying in the last week and I'm pretty much in your same type environment here in N. IN. Come on Spring!!

For sure! By the way...

Thanks for giving me your opinion. I try to be friendly with everyone on here. I'll probably take them to the sale this weekend.
Thanks.

Thank you - --- -The firepit was Dh's Christmas project two years ago. I saw a picture of one like it in Lowes home improvement mag. and then ask Dh to make me one . . . . I so love the man !

Debbi - - - No plans for a hot tub. Some small / low landscaping would be nice . . .. BUT COOPS first!

Thanks for all the compliments. I am sharing them with Dh.
He has just a little more work to do on it - - - BUT it is soooo close to being finished.

I can't wait to start using it . . .

1 Bad Rotti - - - Finding good stock is HARD, VERY HARD to do. . . .

Where I live - - - - it has been very hard to find good BCM's. The ones that I do find are clear across the USA. So, I have to work with what I have. IF I could find better, I would be all over it!

Pink has extremely nice stock. . . . If she is close to you, I would contact her. There is no reason to reinvent the wheel. If getting new stock gets you to the finish line QUICKER then go for it. If you are not happy with egg color, then by all means shop around .. . .

I would like my egg color to be darker. I will have to breed back to my roo a couple of times before that happens. That means a couple of generations of chicks. That means at LEAST a year before I can darken my egg color

TRUST me - - If I find a short cut, I will be all over it!

I'm in the same boat you are, I'm in GA. Pink is way off from us. These blues I bought unseen, well I took another persons word for what they were. I knew 2 had faults with the dark eyes and 1 is clean legged. However the blacks I have that are real young is a different story. I saw their parents, what eggs they came from and the whole nine yards, so maybe they'll turn out like they should. HOPEFULLY

Ain't it FUNNY - - NOT - - how everything good seems to be in Ca, Wa. or Ohio ? ??
It might as well be the other side of the world !

I don't think there is a way to fix the black eye thing and it is a DQ. That would bother me way more than the feathered leg issue.

Flagarden girl is right around the corner from me and she has super dark eggs.

However, she has put her roo up for the winter!

Hopefully, she will remember me when she brings the stud muffin out again

Good luck with the blacks - - - we will need pics as soon as you are ready

Thanks, maybe we need to gang up on Flagarden girl.

Maybe that will teach me not to buy things unseen. I guess its better to find out now instead of wasting a year raising chicks. It'll all work out in the end. Thanks friends.
