I would add the light in the morning. If you add it in the evening it will mess them up roosting. IMO

Morning!

I run lights in select coops from 6am until 9pm, I have never had a roosting problem. What do you mean by this Jim, what specifically do they do? Do they just not want to roost?

Sewandgrow, I love that little coop! I wish I could find some used fruit bins. That's really neat and its recycled! We did build one large coop and a doghouse for our lab out of free pallets. I think dh got tired of pulling nails out of planks for awhile, because after that he was like let's just go to HDepot LOL! They did come out pretty good though.
Home Depot has cull wood from thier 4x4's, sometimes, they are half peices or sometimes just a few inches are cut off one end and they are always only .50cents. It is better to go on Mondays (after the weekend) and they usually have a lot of them.

Mt. Mel..sweet pic. I havent lived in AK but we did live very near the east gate of Yellowstone for awhile. Miss the wildlife there and the hiking!! I can fish here but I loved trout fishing in the rivers and streams there especially around the N. Fork of the Shoshone River in the fall. So beautiful there.

Farmer!

She's a pretty girl! Hope she gives you an egg soon, but I bet she is just a little stressed over the move.

How old is she?

Mornin' all!

My 2 youngest pullets are just over 17 weeks old. Yesterday, I noticed their hatchmate, Roy, trying to breed them!

This is a good two weeks earlier than Fugs started. This batch of boys started crowing at 7 weeks, and now an earlier hormone surge kicking in. Maybe these pullets will mature earlier too and lay sooner than 5 months??? I'm not doing anything to rush the process, and use no lighting. Will be curious to follow this theory to see what happens. Five months is plenty long enough to wait for that first egg!

Sure don't want to rush them into they're not ready for, and they need to do some more growing. Maybe it's just the boys that mature quicker?? Yet, with Fugs and his girls, he started breeding them at just over 4.5 months, and seems like a couple of weeks later I had my first egg. Guess we'll see

Hi robnms!

Welcome!

Both of these chicks are from BCM?

Hello Pink,
Both of these came from a hatch of fbcm's, the eggs were from about 12 different hens. How common is it for fbcm's to throw wheatens?

Check your adult Marans and see if you have any with white legs BC marans. Don

Morning, Raven!

robnms - the Jeanne line has a recessive Wheaten gene in it, fyi. That doens't make it a bad line....just that it has a recessive gene to watch for. Cute chickies!
