Great! Thanks so much for answering, I really appreciate it. I am trying to learn all this, and admit to being fascinated by the genetics. I will keep your notes on the color chart I am amking to help myself.

The Lav & Silver AM's are from John Blehm. Not sure what I will get when the chicks are sent (m?f?) but trying to plan my color project ahead...! If I get a Lav Am female and Male, breeding them will give me all LAV?

I've got to agree. His head and tail especially say game, I think there is a brown red color for them. I don't know much about the game birds so don't quote me on that color thing.
I have heard about bantam marans but they're even more rare than the standard size.
I'd venture to say that a feather footed bird... cochin maybe, got into the game flock and brought in those feathered shanks.

Yes. Lav x Lav = 100% Lav.

Hello!

I agree with the rest, he's either a cross or not Marans at all. You say he's 1 year old and only weighs 3 pounds?? My 19 week cockerels already weigh around 7 pounds, maybe more. Pretty boy, just not Marans.

Another idea is what I have under my sun conure's cage. It is a tray that you set a washing machine in. I got it at Menard's. It's very lightweight but fairly sturdy. TSC sells some plastic trays that you can use when building wire cages. They slide under one cage so you can stack another on top of it. I think they cost more than the trays that you put under the washing machine. These would be a fixed size and I don't know if you need to use something that you can "customize" but they are just ideas.

If you need to make them a specific size and don't want to mess with sheet metal, I would use 1/4" masonite, laminate, coated plywood or something like that, then 1" board around the edges for a lip and reinforcement.

That is similar to what I was doing at first, only I was using three large sheets of vinyl tile. I would slide them out and dump them in the compost or garden - almost exactly 50 feet away, too, actually. I got sick of draging them out, and ended up sticking the tile down to the floor and scraping the poop into a bucket instead. The bucket is much easier to carry and less messy on my hands. Is the floor raised so you can place a bucket under them, at the edge? So far I'm liking the new system much better. I scrape the poop out about every other day.
Any pips?

Yahooo! Snowing here this morning. About 4" now, and it's still coming down. Looks like more is coming in the next week too! The persimmon seeds sure were right on this year! All the ones I heard about had spoons!!

May have to go shovel out a patch of the run for my girls; they will NOT share my enthusiasm for the snow!

Mornin' Pink! Yes, feeling very good this morning. Only had one, short lived headache last night, and went to bed early. Thanks for asking
