When you get that 'bator, let me know and I will see what I can do to help you out with some eggs to put in it.....and when you come get those babies (3 splash...I think they are all girls...pure Davis babies), you can take that little cockerel home with you (he is a pure Davis boy too). You better by writing this stuff down to because now it has left my brain and is out there...it may not come back.

The egg color need work still...mostly they are around the 4 range and every once and a while I'll get a darker one. I haven't figured out who it is yet that lays it, but I will one of these days. Getting my trap nests ready to go now that they are laying more again.

I guess I need to look into the "how to" of trap nests. I never know who is laying what. I do keep everyone separated into breed & color but thats it. It the layer pen there is no definition except my learning eyes. When it comes to the same breed though I am lost. Which one of you sweet little buggers gave me this egg?????????? LOL

I have a couple sets of old trap nests I'm borrowing that my parents weren't using at the moment...so we'll see how it goes. I'm only going to be using it on days when I'll be around a lot so I can check regularly to let them back out once they've laid an egg. I know that some people have made their own trap nests...I wonder if there is anyone on BYC that has posted a tutorial on how to make some? I might have to look into that since I have more breeding pens than trap nests at the moment haha

Oh, the addiction that is chickens. I was raised around them, guess I was sunk from the get go...haha

I must go back and catch up on all the posts, but I just had to show off some baby pictures.

I made my way to aceschix's house yesterday, what a wonderful lady!, and picked up some week old chicks.

I got 8 BCM, 2 black Marans and 2 splash Marans. It is nice to hear peeping in the house!

And for all your viewing pleasure, this is what it looks like here in Vermont.

Yours seem to have darker lines than mine but I had a light golden cuckoo that hatched out in the wheaten coloration except faint brown spot on head and faint chipmunky stripes down the back. He is a barred black tailed buff Marans, I am told, not golden cuckoo. He is my prettiest rooster now I think. Definitely my fav. Anyhow, it will be interesting to see how yours feather out. I've never had any pure wheatens with the brown lines like yours but who knows...
I know I've posted these before but will post them again lol.
He is the one on the left next to the pure wheaten chick

Here he is now, Cuckoo Baby

Cute Little Ones !

Lordy, I can't believe all that snow. . . . What do you do with yourself all winter long?

Find new places to put snow!

In fact we've had about 10 more inches since I took that picture.

Actually today we hiked up a 1/2 mile switchbacked seasonal mt road, than sledded down with the dog chasing us, great fun! We spend a fair abount of time keeping the fire going, eating fatty foods, and sleeping!

Most all of our snow melted here today!! We had two inches of ice, then about 6" of snow on top of that. The other day is was -10 at night and a high in the teens. Today, it was 66*!!!!

They are expecting 70s by Thursday. On the down side, we'll probably have severe weather and tornados as well....

if your trying to find out which hen lays which egg, can you not use food coloring? i know some breeders use it to only collect eggs from the right birds. A few drops in the vent apparently.
