Marans Thread - breed discussion & pictures are welcome!

Good morning! Well I have decided that I want to breed Marans! I have 2 roo's and 2 hens from last years hatch that I bought off someone from here and they lay really nice dark eggs. There really isn't anyone in my area (Idaho) that has a good stock of Marans, so I am looking to breed to standard here.

Does anyone have any good dark eggs for sale?

Also has anyone heard of the Kelvin Jeane Lines? There was an ad on Craigslist for BCM from this line and I had never heard of it.

Thanks!

Do personality traits get passed on at all from Father to Son in chickens? I hope so...

Just sent you an email.

Yes, some traits can be passed down to offspring, be it from the dam or the sire. It's the bad traits that we don't want to pass down and usually those birds are culled specifically for those reasons.

You can only get these traits from this rooster Steve if you want eggs specifically from his pen. You need to let me know if you do, otherwise I will only send eggs from Gnarles' pen.

Hello and welcome!

There are quite a few folks on here in the Pacific Northwest that have quality Marans, maybe some even near you. Check out people's avatars and see where they live, then you can PM them and ask if they sell eggs or chicks.

Kelvin Jeane is Wade Jeane's brother, so those would be from the Wade Jeane line. Ask the person on Craig's list who he got his stock from, check out his birds, and ask to see egg color if at all possible before buying.

Welcome to the Marans thread Candle!!!!!

I have heard of the Kelvin Jeane lines, but I am not versed enough in the history of them to share any degree of helpful info. I do know that Kelvin is Wade Jeane's brother and they were active together with their birds if I remember correctly and both had birds from the same stock???......this is where I digress and let someone else take over on the facts, I know there are several fabulous peeps that will be on sometime and they will help you out with their opinions and advise, lots of Jeane line bird owners out there, they are lovely birds.

I sent you some eggs from a Davis Splash hen and a Davis BCM pullet who are both in with Bill. I also have one of his 1st gen. Blue Copper half Davis dtrs (the one with feathered shanks), I sent a couple of her eggs too. The rest of the eggs are from Gnarles pen, there is a Blue Copper hen, Blue Copper pullet and one of Bill's other 1st gen half Davis dtrs (clean shanked and the biggest blue girl from him) and 7 Black Copper pullets. Ohhhh and little "baby Blue" Bill's 4 mos. old dtr that I am growing out. She grew up with the Delaware girls and is just as super oooooobbbbbeeeerrrr friendly as they are. She sat on my knee last night while I was filling their feeder, just watching what I was doing.

I forgot to tell you all that I got 2 chicks for Valentine's Day yesterday. 2 cute little fuzzy Blue Copper babies, one pure Davis from a BCM pullet and Gnarles, The other is from the Splash hen cross Bill. The little chick from the pullet egg is suprizingly big for coming out of someones first egg, but all I have for comparison right now is a big ol' Bill baby and they are big chicks.

Bill chick on the left and Gnarles chick on the right.

Any luck with the last one hatching?

No more chicks here yet...not sure if I'll get anymore or not, but I'll give'em a couple more days to decide. I did get a couple good surprises this morning tho, got my first light suss ex/ coronation split egg out of my young pullets and I might get the chance to buy out cuckoo hens from the flock mine originally came from. They are not perfect, but they are large and hefty and a really good start for me to buy reasonably locally. Just gotta sort out the details and see if they are indeed what I'm looking for.

I'll try to get some pics of a few of the chicks today if I can get them to stand still long enough...and I owe Math ace a pic or two of a cockerel of mine. Off I go..

Took a couple of quick snapshots of my blues and blacks. After looking at the pics there's a lot more copper color coming through on the head and neck than I saw before. Won't complain about that...hopefully I'll get some straight blues coming through in this next batch coming. The blues this time are really dark, which I loooove!
