Marans Thread - breed discussion & pictures are welcome!

I didn't really look for copper tint, I didn't have my glasses on, and there is no direct sunlight until later in the day. They just have this over-all beautiful dark blue to them...but then again, they have just gotten these feathers and are not done feathering in. Isn't that one OE pretty? She looks WAY better in real life -- kinda' like blue-laced Splash?

In the bottom picture - the one of the funky looking OE - I see copper in the hackles of that smaller blue hen

Very pretty girls, Mel and Pink. Although I love the look of the blues, I'm going to stick with my BCM's. I wish I could handle more varieties, but until I get my barn finished, it's not going to happen.

I'm getting some lavender ameraucanas from John Blehm in a month, then I will mix a couple of them with my marans to get some olive eggers. Should make for a pretty colorful egg basket.

6-8 inches of snow here. Cold and cloudy. 3 of my stupid leghorns spent the night out perched on the fence over their run. I found them this morning. They must have been out there through the whole storm. One had an icesicle stuck to her butt.

LMAO!!! Good Morning Susie

Hey Mel! What's up? I didn't pull that ice off her butt.

I think she might have resented that, so it's just going to have to melt!

I'm off to the range to do a little plinkin'.

Warm wishes to all.

Mornin' Mel,

I really like that second pic you took. Loove the dark blue and the lacing. You have a really good start with that group of birds!!! I would be hanging out with them all the time...hahah man, I'm such a dork

Yea...my hatchery stock is going on Craigslist just as soon as some of these other birds start to lay. There is a guy out here who sells hatchery stock started pullets for $20.00 ea.....I sell mine for $10.00. My next "Big Venture" is going to build an entire new barn for my chickens, pigs, and cattle. I'm going to have Pinkchick help me with the designing of the poultry part, since I will be wanting a few separate pens for breeding, breed separation, and such. In "A Perfect World" this will be built in late summer of 2011...

I bought some cuckoo chicks last spring and kept the 4 best for my start with the cuckoos and sold a trio to a lady that was looking for some more layers for her pen and then all of a sudden she pops up selling chicks from them at pretty high prices. Like three or four times what I would charge. It can be frustrating when people are selling at such high prices for the quality.

Wow....a new barn!! That's awesome! I bet by the time you and Kim sit down and sort out the plans for breeding pens you will have a fantastic set up! You'll have to post pics of the process!
