Marans Thread - breed discussion & pictures are welcome!

I've been doing so well all day...but I am starting to hear more and more chickers in the incubator...and the ones from this morning that had hatched are starting to let me know about it!...Uggghhhhhh....the suspense is killing me! I don't know how long I can hold out...

Hahaha....i wish i could see them hatching....but I have a cabinet incubator with a solid door, except with a tiny window at the top....which does noooo good with being able to tell what's hatching.

( I will be putting some hand tools too good use and cutting out a larger window and making a double pane of acrylic so I can see in the whole incubator...when I take a break hatching that is

But, I did open the incubator.....I know, horrible of me...but I had a chick that had been yelling its head off for an hour and I started to get worried...so I opened it and.....annnnnnd....aaaannnnnd....I already have 18 chicks! I about fell over cause I have some beeeeaaauuttttiiiessss!!!!

There is one little teeny tiny weak chick I'm kind of worried about, but I'm keeping my fingers crossed they will get some strength once they get sleep and food in them.
Time for sleep so I can hopefully deal with more chickers tomorrow!

Sun exposure and UV's cause yellowing in the hackle and saddle of birds with recessive white, for example white marans or bresse gauloise. I wonder if this could also cause yellowing in the saddle/hackle of silver cuckoos.

Anyone got cuckoos who were in the sun all summer and stayed pristine white?

I'm just 4 days ahead of you guys... LET'S DO THIS!

I would love to get some black copper maran eggs or day old babies. Wouldn't need to be for show at all, just dark eggs. We have a lot of space and our chickens are in a well loved family pet type of environment. I am in Maine, and am unable to find any locally. Any ideas where I should/could go to get some? Any sources to avoid?

I put my JUMBO marans eggs in there at 2:00 this morning. They take an extra day to hatch. If I want everything to hatch on Day 21, the jumbos need to go in earlier than the rest. I have speckled sussex eggs that SHOULD be here this morning. I am only going to let them rest until tonight. Then into the incubator with the rest of the marans eggs.

It is good that you are 4 days ahead of us. . . . you can post chick pictures as we are waiting for ours to hatch!

Didn't somebody just get eggs from Pink in MAINE? Maybe that person is hatching some of their eggs like I am and would have extra.

Watch the postings on this thread. . . a lot of us include where we are. . .

I am sure someone will pop up with some names for you. . . If you aren't intersted in show quality, just a dark egg layer . . . . we should be able to hook you up pretty quickly!
