Hi Don

You can show eggs from the wheatens and they will be judge along side the wheaten eggs and the BC eggs along side the BC's. In some shows they also do a People's choice and they are judged by people looking at the eggs. Very often the winning eggs that people judge are different than the ones the judge selects.

I have an Brinsea Eco 20 bator with 18 Marans eggs. I'm supposed to go into lock-down tomorrow night. I tried candling them on day seven with no luck. Eggs were too darn dark, so they will all be going into lock-down. I've usually used my Genesis as a hatcher and place the eggs in egg cartons, but I don't think these eggs would fit in the Brinsea if put in egg cartons. Does anyone know if it's OK to hatch 18 eggs in a Brinsea Eco 20 or would that be too crowded (that is hoping I get a good hatch rate)? Should I be worried about little chicks playing soccer or do the eggs still do OK?

Bev, I think Don was referring to some unethical behavior from people who may pull the *ol' switcheroo* of BCM eggs as wheaten Marans eggs. Since you bring the eggs to the shows, it is only based upon peoples' honesty that the eggs they present are actually the eggs from that breed of Marans.

Hello all! Finally got my computer up and running again, now the thunder storms are moving in so have to go again! Hope to be back on tonight to tell my sad story

Pink, your eggies go into lockdown tonight, please keep your fingers crossed for me! I have a feeling this is going to be a very sad, if any type of hatch!

I am in the same boat as you... I have 18 Marans eggs in the Brinsea Eco 20 + 11 Wellie eggs. 29 Total. 5 sitting on top of the 24. By lockdown I should be able to eliminate some clears so that I have only 24+/-. I plan on removing some of the first hatched (and their shells) quickly during the hatch to make room for the later hatchers... I am told that the Brinsea recovers heat and humidity quickly enough where it shouldn't be a issue to quickly open and thin out the herd... I have no choice...

wheaten, duckwing and brown/pertridge roosters basically look the same. They all have the "duckwing" = groundcolor wing triangle.
Duckwing used to point to a blue sheen on the wing bar(?) opposed to the green sheen of crowwing.
The wing triangle being groundcolor (gold/silver) or black didn't catch the eye apparently...

Oh that's crazy! I have a dozen showgirl eggs in a crappy LG that I've been popping on top of my eggs in a full hova genesis. I unplug the turner when I do that- can you really keep the turner on with eggs on top of eachother? I'm new to the whole turner thing, and not crazy about how many fewer eggs I can fit, but it's easy....

Anyway- here's some pics of my youngsters. I also have some of Gary Ramey's BC Marans going on lockdown tomorrow. Haven't really been able to see in them so I hope they're good- LOL!

Seabreeze, I do not know if you are aware of it or not but the Chairman of the APA standard revision committe comes on this thread and answers questions. Post a clear picture and on the top put attention Walt Leonard. He is also an APA Judge. Don

It is a little nuts... I got the idea from others here on BYC. What I have to do is put little pieces of rolled up bubble wrap carefully placed to pad the eggs so that they do not roll... Doesn't take much. Other people have used rolled up wads of wax paper... I couldn't bare to eliminate the extras - they all deserve a chance. I candled last night and I think I have at least 3 so far that won't make it to lockdown so that will make some room...

Nice pics! Love the name Super Freak! Is he really 'Super Freaky' Is that some 'extra comb' or something on the back of his head, or just a wierd picture?
