I am seeing some BIG and PINK COMBs - - - you are expecting some cockerels - - - RIGHT ? ?

A variety pack is nice . . . . Makes it easier to tell everyone apart.

I got some leghorns my first time out AND had to zip tie their legs to tell them apart.

I still have those girls. .. . they lay when no one else is laying. HOWEVER, without the leg bands, I stil can not tell them apart.

Lets see if I can remember this correctly off the top of my knoggin. lol! black x black = 100% black. black x blue = 50% black 50% blue. blue x blue = 50% blue 25% black & 25% splash. splash x blue= 50% blue 50% splash. splash x black = 100% blue. splash x splash = 100% splash. I know I missed something and messed something up so hopefully someone comes by and corrects me and gives it to you straight.

edited to add...I think I messed up on the blue x splash. Will correct when I get home.

Gilavina~ I get the vet wrap at the feed store in the horsie vet section. They have like 25 different colors.

I of course use the pink roll more than any of them. Pink is for pure Davis birds, blue is my Bill boys kids, purple is for any chicks produced from Bill x any Davis bird and I sometimes uses green for anything else. If I have a bird that is 3\\4 blood or something of a certain cross I use pink on one leg and blue on the other to tell me who the parents were specifically.

You know you will want to keep at least one . . . so don't be in a rush to get rid of them until they have grown out a little.

I love the brooder box in the pic. It looks like mine, except I didn't think to put a stick in there for them to jump up on and roost. Mine will have one in the morning!

That's familiar... I've got over 50 right now of different ages growing out in our basement. Fortunately some are for the neighbor and they're taking them in a week! I'm so done for awhile with growing out chicks. Good thing I've got two good broodies (hopefully) to do that job for me this summer.

Hatching of shipped eggs from Nadine is going well. So far of 18 eggs I have 3 blue coppers, 6 black coppers, two more in the incubator hatched (looking black), and 4 more pips! That leaves 3 eggs with no action. I will take pictures when everyone is dried off and cute. I am so amazed at this hatch.... sooo many chicks.

Hi everyone , Thought I would update my last post about getting some Marans . The lady was nice and helped me pick out 13 Marans and my husband picked for himself a black/white mottled Cochin . She had a pen of blue , black and splash Marans , another pen of Cuckoo Marans . This pic is not the best as they want nothing to do with me . The babies are about 18 days old now . I love the colors !

Good for you.....Congratulations. What a start, you have your own ready made flock going there.
