Marans Thread - breed discussion & pictures are welcome!

Morning EVERYONE!

Spitman~ That's a BEAUTIFUL 'bator! And I like your rooster and would love to see more photos of him if you have them.

Enggass~ The question you PM'd me the other day.......that chick will be fine, it should feather out normally.

Gilavina~

I cut a strip off the roll of wrap about 5/8" wide and wrap around each leg and press together leaving a span between the legs of a natural distance for the chick, sometimes I give them a little more wiggle room in distance between the legs than natural, I find sometimes with the natural distance they can't figure out how to walk with the hobbles, leaving it a little bit bigger they can have an easier time. Sometimes I have to leave them on for a week or so, but most of the time they figure it out within a couple of days but I do leave on for a couple days longer than they need just for GP (general purposes).

Here's a pic of one of the big butted Blue Coppers that hatched yesterday morning. I don't know that she was all that thrilled with me for this mornings photo shoot.

But she hung in there like a big girl!

Dh rigged me up an homemade incubator out of an igloo cooler. I have been hatching in it since last November. I have had some really good hatches - - - even on shipped eggs. The only negative thing is there is not enough room in it for an auto egg turner. So, I am the egg turner for each egg. Each hatch we have fine tuned and perfected something. . . . The first 18 days are a piece of cake. The last 3 days is where we keep making changes. We are perfecting a hatching set up where the eggs can be separated and circulation not be blocked.

So, Dh wants to build another incubator that is big enough for the auto egg turner. . .. BUT I have some other projects for him to do first

I need the chicken coops FINISHED for all the chicks that I have already hatched. I've made temp chicken brooders - 2 are finished and in use. I am working on the third one. These I do pretty much by myself. . . . BUT the COOPS . . . . Those I will need him to LEAD and I'll assist

I sent her an email but it didn't go through and was bounced back to me....I saw her post a couple weeks ago on the Marans Club but haven't seen any action since then. I will try to give her a call if I can locate her phone # again. I always misplace that notebook with her # in it. She wanted me to go to the show in Stevenson with her later this month it would be a blast! I will let you know if I hear from her. I know this is a busy season with her kids and her horsie groups so I am hoping that's where she's up to.

Really cool incubator. Are those 2 fans on the bottom in the center facing each other? Do you have holes from the water reservoir spaces to the fans and then to the top? Also is that another water reservoir and light bulb in the top of the incubator? What did you use to treat the wood of the interior and exterior of the incubator? Thanks for posting pic of yours, I would love to make one like that!!
