Marans Thread - breed discussion & pictures are welcome!

Bravo-Good luck with your surgery. I have no experience with that, but I have straightened a crooked toe or two. It's been so long ago, though, I can't remember how I bandaged it. I am treating a hen that I recently got that had bumblefoot when I got her. I have it wrapped with vetwrap. Maybe a very thin strip of vetwrap will work after the surgery.

Thank you! Do you know the name of the condition? I'd like to google it and if possible operate tonight.

It's only a few hrs old.

In people, it's called syndactyly...in chickens, I don't know.

Well surgery was a total success. One of the fused little toes even had its own nails and the webbing was so thin there was almost no bleeding. Can anyone recommend what supplements I should ad for the curled toes?

I had BCM eggs from my flock and also purchased eggs in the incubator...tried to separate them using suet cages = epic fail. The spacings were too big and chicks were moving from pen to pen. There is no way to tell what egg it came from but I'll be watching this very closely to make sure it didnt come from my birds.

Lesson learned today...make sure separators in the incubator actually work

lol

Next hatch will only be BCM eggs from one breeder

The AMERICAN standard is being based on the French. That is why any questions about a marans color that has not had an American SOP written for are referred to the FRENCH standard . .. . .

The old time marans breeders in the US ( Jean, Davis, and Presley) favored the french style ( feathered legs) and that is why there is more interest in those.

I am playing with different ways of keeping different breeders eggs separate during hatching. I like to zip tie the different breeders chicks so that I can track them thru adulthood.

CAUSES: It can be genetics or it can be issues during incubation. PERSONALLY, I believe you can see deformities from rough handling of the eggs during shipping.
WILL it pass on to the next generation - - - - you won't know until you try.
If it was from humidity or temp issues during incubation, THEN it should not effect the offspring.
If is was from genetics, it may effect some offspring, BUT NOT ALL. I have a hen with crooked toes and she throws some chicks with it.
It is like a chick without leg feathering. . . . if you mate her to one with leg feathering MOST of the chicks will have feathers, but a few will still not have feathering.

I keep the offspring from my crooked toe hen that do not have crooked toes and cull the others. I wouldn't sell any eggs from my crooked toe hen, but by the time I think my flock is good enough to sell eggs . . . . My crooked toe hen probably won't be with us anymore.

Morning Everyone!
Hope all are doing great! Wish I had more time to hang and play with my Marans friends. Maybe this weekend I'll get some good BYC time in under my belt. I am kinda going through withdrawals.

So I was saving some eggs for myself this week to incubate and after counting chickens last night I don't think that I should.

I put them up for auction if anyone is interested and they must go out the door tomorrow morning. Here's the link.
I have never auctioned off Marans eggs before and it is even more rare that I am letting them go off the waiting list. Gosh that makes me sound like I am truly a chicken or egg hoarder doesn't it? LOL...I've got to change my ways.

Hi Heather! You have chicken math all worked out and I think that they will be a wonderful B-day present to yourself.

It was great talking to you yesterday! I will definately let you know when I have some babies available for you. Shouldn't be long...cross your fingers that we get some splash babies. I normally always get blues, but every so often a hatch comes along that doesn't produce any splash babies, however the last 4 hatches I have done have all produced some splash so keep your fingers crossed. I will let you know what I have for you and I have one set of eggs that is suppose to hatch on 4-7 and another on 4-9 so we should have some chickies. I should be home on Sunday all day and that may be the only day I can meet with you for pick up but we will be talking before that.

mornin' kim...

I've never bid on eggs here before, but have always wondered about how it works? I try to avoid going over to that section, but your auction is making me curious!

Well..I would wait till the last minute or less if you want to bid, then do it. Otherwise you just drive up the price on your eggs or whatever. I seldom lose a bid if its something I really want lol. If you are used to bidding on ebay, then the other auctions are too easy.

We lost power for an hour this morning due to all those storms rolling through here. Of course I just set some more eggs a few days ago LOL! How come we never lose power when the incubators aren't running?
