So, do you want to know anything else?

In a few months, you can use that one girl with one of your cockerels and have plenty of babies. . ..

Do you have copper on any of your marans?

Yup got a blue splash, black, blue copper and blue cockerel....

But I'm not breeding maran's I just wanted a couple hens for dark eggs..

How rare is a pure black? I'm just wanting to sell him correctly...i buy quality eggs then sell what I don't keep for my flock.. helps off set the eggs.. but all boys...

Sometimes they have quite a lot of melanizatioin (sp?) and the copper feathers take a long time to come out. I'd wait until he is at least 6 months old. Its very rare for a truly black male to hatch out of black coppers. People are trying to get pure black all the time, and its very difficult and a long process.

Congratulations!

Wheatens cannot be sexed at hatch...however they can be sexed by about a week to 10 days by the color coming in one their wings. Males will have a dark almost blackish color coming in and females will be a taupy beigeish fawny color. Yes Wheaten cockerels hatch yellow. The easiest way to tell a Wheatens male upon maturity from a Black Copper male is in the wing triangle, Wheatens will be a cinnamon color and a Black Coppers wing triangles are black.

Do you have a photo of the chick to share when you have time?

I agree Sue. And aren't pure Black, Blue and Splash based on the Silver gene and created from Cuckoo's and not the Coppers ER Birchen gene? So creating a pure Black, Blue and Splash variety from Coppers would be virtually impossible and would be ER birds that are WAY over melanized?

thank you PinkChick

I'll post a pic as soon as it dries and is ready to join the others. (boy are they ever going to wonder what got into their gene pool) I sure hope that it doesn't get picked on.

I just picked up my chicks yesterday they are about two weeks old. They are Cuckoo Marans and looks like I have at least 3 Roos. I live in Veneta, Oregon which is not far. If you want a Roo I'll trade for one of your chicks.

My BCM broody did a great job hatching her eggs, and she seems to be a great momma so far. Only one egg didn't hatch, and it sloshed when I shook it, so it was probably clear.

I have a question for my trusted Marans-loving colleagues: I'm hatching 7 turkey eggs for a new acquaintance and I don't want to mess it up. Anything I should do differently other than wait 7 more days? Sorry for the off-topic. I've searched and haven't found anything useful.
