Marans Thread - breed discussion & pictures are welcome!

Thanks Debbi. Isn't there another *blue* breed that lays a med. brown egg, blue Orp perhaps or is body style too radically different than Marans? I haven't checked the Orps breed standard.

Ha Ha!! Here I agree with you Don! I've seen the Iowa Blue thread before too, and wondered how long it would be till someone started using them to make Birchen Marans. Seems they have yellow leg problems in the gene pool, and also the cross would lessen the size of the birds, and you would lose egg color. Just my opinion, but if you can't get the color you want and stay within the breed (no outcrosses), then you don't need the color! That's just me..

Debbi, if you got rid of everything that is showing up now that had other Breeds bred into the Marans you would have very little left. All these new colors just didn't show up all at once. Don

The APA officials are at the show this weekend where they voted to approve the BC.

Can not be much more official than Bev Davis telling everyone they passed. Don

I guess by Monday a press release should be out with the official standards, it seems to me if it was approved a simple news release on the APA sight would be worth the time to post.

I would be surprised if anything was posted on the APA site. I was told that the Marans standard would most likely be the last submitted by the MCCUSA for the Black Copper. Don

I agree there too. The more I see of some Marans, and learn of other breeds, the more I can see it. As small as the Marans gene pool is here, I still don't think outcrossing will help anything.

CONGRATS on the hatch!! Keep going!!

MCCUSA stands for Marans Chicken Club USA. They are the club that has been working with the APA on the Black Coppers getting approved.
