Don could you explain a little why it is that some roosters have this problem??? I haven't seen it in any hens... has anyone?

She is one of the offspring from the Black Copper pullets that I culled to the laying flock yesterday and egg-zactly one of the reasons why I removed her from the flock and I wasn't to thrilled with her egg color. Geesh.....start out with 8 BCM girls and now after a year, slowly removing them one by one, I will shortly be down to 5 BCM females in my Davis pen..the one left to remove if I can catch her lay an egg.....she lays a milky chocolate egg, though it is pretty, it just doesn't cut the grade for me.

Aren't those the 2 that you hatched from my eggs? Do you remember which eggs they hatched from? I suspect I know egg-zactly which gal is laying it.

Jan & Kim, The rudimentary Toe is one of the unknowns with feather leg poultry that has never been studied as fas as I know. I have had it with Cochins and Brahmas, both bantams and large fowl. As for my experience it doesn't seem to discriminate to either sex.

From my own experience I believe it to be related to too much inbreeding and not culling deep enough. If it wasn't possitively necessary would not breed a male and female that showed it together. Will say this for folks that are breeding real close we must cull out the major faults as we go along or they will start multiplying too fast to be able to keep them under control.

Kim, I like your answer, if there is more to like than there is to dislike go ahead and these birds with the toe.

A few days ago I suggested that we start going more by the SOP as it will take precedence over anything not spelled out in the approved standard.

Thanks Don: I have only seen this in the males. I ordered in some new offspring last year and all the males had the same fault. They were faulted in other areas beyond what I currently have. I have yet to see it in any of the females.
