Marans Thread - breed discussion & pictures are welcome!

The undercoat color has been eliminated in the BC standard and there is nothing in the Blue Copper. Like you said the undercolor is sure going to be different on the two. I say breed the shade of Copper you like and do not worry about it as there are going to be different shades of Copper. The proposed Blue Copper standard will be completely reworked.

The undercolor should of been included in the standard as it is so important in getting the color right. At every show I have seen Marans at there has been a marans with white tail or wing get best or reserve of variety, go figure.

Hatched some BCM eggs from a friend, and wound up with this little beauty...

And again next to a BCM chick...

Is it a splash copper, or a blue copper?

You're right there, Don. Why did they take it out of the SOP??

Thanks snowbird. Yeah that is wierd that it would be left out of the standard.
I try real hard not to let any light or brown undercoats in my Bcms. I think thats why mine don't have any white tail feathers (the ones I'm breeding) and thats maybe why the females are on the darker side(?) The bayhorsebonnie roos I got, had white in thier tails and I decided not to breed them into my existing flock even though they are from dark eggs. I do have the darker bhb females in there to be bred with a male with no white feathers and very dark undercoat. If the offspring end up with any white they will be outta there even if they are dark layers. So far they haven't had any white feather issues. I have enough faults to deal with as is LOL!

Some pics of Pink's babies yesterday since it was pretty nice out. They are about nine weeks old now. I believe this may be a Bill copy? I think he is turning out nice. I so wish he did not have clean legs.

Sweet Poularde! That first pic of the black chicks looks familiar. The one in the back, looks just like my Olivia! She is a really dark jet black, and has really soft feathers. Mine will be 9 weeks old this Saturday. Need to get more pics of mine, maybe later. It is HOTTER than blazes here today!
